Kentucky State Veterinarian Office Keeps an Eye (and writes a report) on EHV-1 in Florida -- Kentucky Horse Council

Kentucky State Veterinarian Office Keeps an Eye (and writes a report) on EHV-1 in Florida -- Kentucky Horse Council | The Jurga Report: Horse Health, Welfare, and Care | Scoop.it

@FranJurga writes: The Kentucky Horse Council has shared a report from Rusty Ford in the Kentucky State Veterinarian's office on the details of the EHV situation in Florida.

Kentucky is being diligent about the Florida cases out of respect for the large number of horses in that state, and also because so many of the horses affected by the outbreak in Florida will break camp at the end of March...and the Kentucky Horse Park shows and other events or destinations in the state may be their next stop.

Today’s news, shared early yesterday by the New York Times, suggests that Doug O’Neill knew throughout the horse’s preparation for the Belmont that his horse was unsound. The story stated that the horse had been diagnosed with osteoarthritis after a post-Preakness set of radiographs and that two days before the Belmont “the colt was injected with two powerful painkillers as well as a synthetic joint fluid”.

The allegations came on the eve of a US Senate Commerce Committee hearing investigating the use of medication and performance-enhancing drugs in racing.

Thoroughbred Racing Reform: Travers Stakes Entrants Face Heightened Scrutiny at Saratoga | New York Times | The Jurga Report: Horse Health, Welfare, and Care | Scoop.it

"The hard-line stance comes in the wake of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s taking control of horse racing in New York in the hopes of overhauling a scandal-plagued industry.

"New York authorities have ordered that all horses racing in the Travers Stakes on Aug. 25 be placed under 24-hour surveillance, and their trainers will have to document each medical treatment a horse receives in the 72 hours before the race.
