PETA “Blazes” a New Trail at the Kentucky Derby as Congress Receives Proposed Racing Medication Legislation

PETA “Blazes” a New Trail at the Kentucky Derby as Congress Receives Proposed Racing Medication Legislation | The Jurga Report: Horse Health, Welfare, and Care | Scoop.it

Mint juleps? Twin spires? Big hats? Those are hardly the images that this billboard designed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) evokes but that’s what you will see if you are in Louisville, Kentucky this week.

The outspoken media experts at PETA have created an image of a horse with a hypodermic needle for a blaze running down its face.

In a touch of classic irony, Congress may soon be deliberating new legislation to preclude drugs from racing. The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act would provide the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) with authority to clean up the sport and enforce anti-doping standards in races with simulcast wagering.

PETA and Congressional delegations on the same side of an issue? Don’t bet on it, but remember that when it comes to horse racing, anything can happen. And probably will.

Ascot Racecourse : Frankel's Last Race Planned for October 20 in the QIPCO Champion Stakes | The Jurga Report: Horse Health, Welfare, and Care | Scoop.it

Champion Thoroughbred Frankel’s next and, in all probability, last race will be the £1.3m QIPCO Champion Stakes, Europe’s most valuable mile and a quarter race, at Ascot on QIPCO British Champions Day, Saturday 20 October.

That news was confirmed today by Lord Grimthorpe, racing manager to Frankel’s owner, Prince Khalid Abdulla.

They're ending the year by taking care of their own--are you? via Paulick Report

They're ending the year by taking care of their own--are you? via Paulick Report | The Jurga Report: Horse Health, Welfare, and Care | Scoop.it

This isn’t a story of a stakes winner, but a familiar one of horses that needed help in finding homes after their racing days were over. It’s a story of how a community of caring people can make a difference in the lives of those horses.

The large and well-known organizations do so much good, yet this grass roots movement by local horse people is just as vital to the overall success of these rescues.

Fran Jurga's insight:

@FranJurga wrote: The situation is bigger than any of us, but possibly not bigger than all of us.

Please end your year by helping horses in need with donations like Susie describes, and with donations to prevent horses from getting into situations like these.

When people ask me for advice, I especially recommend donations to laminitis research through the Animal Health Foundation (click to learn more or donate), which funds research on many levels, from the most high-tech science to simplifying insulin resistance testing.

Laminitis affects horses of all ages and all breeds and you only have to visit an auction or horse rescue farm to see how many of the unwanted horses have either active laminitis or evidence of a history of the disease.

No matter what your choice is, find out what organizations and individuals are at work in your region, and get involved. Some people want to help horses with a specific disease, horses of a specific breed (like Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds or donkeys), and still others develop a relationship with horses that have competed in a sport, been through a tragedy, or that are overcoming great odds.

Today's the day, and the champagne will taste much sweeter (or drier, depending on your bottle) if you know you ended your year on a helpful note.

Thoroughbred Racing Reform: Travers Stakes Entrants Face Heightened Scrutiny at Saratoga | New York Times

Thoroughbred Racing Reform: Travers Stakes Entrants Face Heightened Scrutiny at Saratoga | New York Times | The Jurga Report: Horse Health, Welfare, and Care | Scoop.it

"The hard-line stance comes in the wake of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s taking control of horse racing in New York in the hopes of overhauling a scandal-plagued industry.

"New York authorities have ordered that all horses racing in the Travers Stakes on Aug. 25 be placed under 24-hour surveillance, and their trainers will have to document each medical treatment a horse receives in the 72 hours before the race.
