Making room for innovation

Making room for innovation | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it

One of my favorite books on leadership is The Future of Management by Gary Hamel. If you haven’t read it, I encourage you to do so. You can read my book review but the essential premise is that current management models, which are centered on control and efficiency, are extremely ill-suited for an era in which adaptability and creativity drive organizational success.

An Innovation Lesson from Dr. Seuss

An Innovation Lesson from Dr. Seuss | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it

Dartmouth College graduates are generally big supporters of our most famous alumni — Theodor Geisel (Class of 1925) known better as Dr. Seuss. On Sunday evening, my son pleasantly surprised me by picking one of my favorite Dr. Seuss stories, The Sneetches, from the shelf for his bed time reading. Reading the story helped me visualize why a company I recently visited was approaching innovation the wrong way.

Creative Ways to Boost Creativity

Creative Ways to Boost Creativity | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it

Creativity is something that all people should develop. There is a misconception that creativity is important only among artists, poets and writers. But the truth is, creativity can be used in other fields as well. The most successful scientists, businessmen and politicians are those who are very creative.

The Innovation Knowing-Doing Gap

If you scrutinize the theories on innovation they seem to conclude for example, that ambidextrous organizations are best at handling incremental innovations rather than radical, and if we would focus more on learning, experimental organizations...

Strategic Innovation And The Quest To Reinvent Management

Strategic Innovation And The Quest To Reinvent Management | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it

I spoke at a number of conferences the last few weeks on the same topic of Strategic Innovation in the Age of Reinvention. Reinvention is the word as every individual, practicing professional, multi-nationals, non-profits, education institution and government ought to be thinking about “reinvention”. We desperately need to “totally reinvent ourselves” in order to transform our economy, organizations, politics and societies.

The Making of an Innovation Master

The Making of an Innovation Master | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it

A workshop attendee asked me this seemingly simple question: “So, what else should I read to learn more about innovation?”

It’s a hard question to answer because there is so much high-quality material out there. And specific recommendations depend on the specific topic about which you are most curious. But in thinking it through, I did eventually end up with a highly personal list I call “The Masters of Innovation” (which appears in my latest book).

What is the downside of creativity? Isn’t it possible that humans are too creative?

The best part of book tours are the questions. After spending years with the same ideas and sentences – they become old friends – it’s invigorating to see how people react, to keep track of which concepts spark their curiosity. It’s also fun to consider questions that never occured to me while writing the book. For instance, I was recently stumped by a seemingly obvious query that I hadn’t really considered. It was asked by a 4th grader: “What,” he wanted to know, “is the downside of creativity? Isn’t it possible that humans are too creative?”

Pandora's box and innovation

Pandora's box and innovation | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it

I've been thinking a lot about the current fad of innovation, where companies allow only very limited innovation exercises and quickly close the door again on innovation. The concept of closely monitoring innovation in this manner reminds me to some extent of the story of Pandora.

The evolution of business

The evolution of business | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it

The social business movement appears to be in full swing. Over the past weeks, I have read time and time again that 2012 will be the year of social business (Business Computing World, SXSW, We are social). In terms of awareness, I totally agree; in terms of achieving our goals, perhaps that is too ambitious in such a short time period.

Why China won’t be innovative for at least 20 more years

Why China won’t be innovative for at least 20 more years | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
Xu Xiaoping, one of China’s most prominent angel investors, doesn’t think China will be able to produce its own equivalent of Steve Jobs or Bill Gates in this generation.

On Saturday, I went to a Yale Club of Beijing talk by Xu Xiaoping at Peking University. He’s an investor in tech startups as well as in film and philanthropy. At the end of 2011, his angel fund Zhenfund announced its partnership with Sequoia Capital China to create a $30 million joint-venture seed fund.

« Si le produit de vos rêves n’existe pas, aidez-nous à l’inventer » : telle pourrait être la proposition faite par les Living Labs.

L’idée est d’inviter tous les acteurs et notamment les utilisateurs (citoyens, collectivités, PME, associations ou institutions), dès la conception d’un service ou d’un produit.

I was trawling through my usual channels of content this morning and came across these posts on curation. Certainly a lot of conversation in the bloggersphere has been stimulated by the posting of the curator’s code. The code states that we should “keep the rabbit hole of the Internet open by honouring discovery”.

Cyborg Snail Turned Into Living Battery

Cyborg Snail Turned Into Living Battery | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
A snail transformed into a living battery has moved the world one step closer to having tiny cyborg spies underfoot.

The pioneering experiment harnessed a snail's blood sugar to "recharge" an implanted battery — the first time researchers have shown sustainable generation of electricity in a living creature's body over several months. If the snails' bodies can create enough electricity to power microelectronics, they could act as living sensors or detectors for the U.S. military and Homeland Security.
