Smart City Design Principles

Smart City Design Principles | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it

At the same time that cities everywhere are seeking funds for Smarter City initiatives, and often relying on central government or research grants to do so, I know of literallybillions of Pounds, Euros, and Dollars that are being spent on relatively conventional development and infrastructure projects that aren’t particularly “smart”.

Driverless Tech? It's Only The Tip Of The Disruption Iceberg

When people find out I work in the auto industry they all want to ask me about driverless and electric cars. Don’t get me wrong, I’m as excited about these as the next person, but when it comes to innovation in my industry, it’s only the tip of the tech disruption iceberg.

JuniperVoice: How Do Top Cybersecurity Experts Keep Our Data Safe? | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
With the world changing rapidly most corporate executives are starting to feel the pressure. There is a realization that beyond cost-cutting and operational efficiency, companies must also invest in developing their innovation pipeline. At the beginning, corporate leaders often reach for easy solutions or low hanging fruit. They focus on the training and improving the capabilities of product teams. There are now quite a few organizations offering training in design thinking, lean startup and agile product development. While these grassroots movements are well and good, it is also starting to dawn on most executives that lean startup training is not enough.

The Heart of Innovation: Bottom Up Innovation!

The Heart of Innovation: Bottom Up Innovation! | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
If you are working with a team of any kind and are hoping for more innovation, know this: it's a function of "intrinsic motivation", not pep talks, carrots, sticks, or "new initiatives." Find out what people REALLY want to do and, assuming it is aligned with your organization's vision, give your blessings and get out the way.

Why Hollow Innovations Don't Succeed

Why Hollow Innovations Don't Succeed | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
In April, one of Silicon Valley's most backed startups of the last year was Juicero Inc. The San Francisco company's single-serving juice machine caught the imagination of investors, thanks in part to its internet connection and its healthy output, drawing in no less than $120 million from Google's venture capital arm among others. The single-serving packs would be delivered weekly to users at a cost, and the machine itself would have set you back $400.

Intellectual property laws demand a 21st-century solution

Intellectual property laws demand a 21st-century solution | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it

When the South African government attempted to amend its laws in 1997 to avail itself of affordable generic medicines for the treatment of HIV/Aids, the full legal might of the global pharmaceutical industry bore down on the country, delaying implementation and extracting a high human cost. South Africa eventually won its case, but the government learned its lesson: it did not try again to put its citizens’ health and wellbeing into its own hands by challenging the conventional global intellectual property (IP) regime.

The Art Of Ignorance In Innovation

The Art Of Ignorance In Innovation | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
You may find this very hard to believe, but the people in your organization who don't know what they're doing – the Ignorants, as I like to call them – are absolutely crucial for the future of your company. As paradoxical and illogical as this may sound, I believe one of the main tasks of modern leadership is to protect the 1% in your organization that is trying to do things that have never been done.

Let’s Talk… Innovation

Let’s Talk… Innovation | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
This year, Australia continued its descent in the Global Innovation Index, dropping four places*. Now ranked 23rd, the nation’s innovation performance lags behind that of neighbour (and Rugby rival) New Zealand. This is concerning given the Federal Government’s $1.1 billion National Innovation and Science Agenda, launched nearly two years ago, was intended to transform Australia into an innovation leader.

Should tech companies run our cities?

Should tech companies run our cities? | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
It sounds almost dystopian: One of North America's largest cities handing over a key neighborhood to a tech giant so it can be rebuilt from scratch. That, however, may be exactly what is about to happen. Recently, it was announced that Sidewalk Labs, a division of Google-parent Alphabet, will (pending approval) lead the creation of about a 12-acre district called Quayside in a prime area of Toronto's newly revitalized waterfront area.

Dare to innovate. Do something astonishing. Disrupt yourself. | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
When dealing with industry and market transitions, I believe that it’s personal disruption that is the ultimate catalyst for change, especially at work. On this episode of the What’s Next! podcast, I got the pleasure to speak with Whitney Johnson. Not only was Whitney recognized as one of the world’s most influential management thinkers in 2015, as president and cofounder of Rose Park Advisors’ Disruptive Innovation Fund with Clayton Christensen, Johnson used the theory of disruptive innovation to invest in publicly traded stocks and private early-stage companies.
