The anti-innovation presidency

The anti-innovation presidency | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
“Innovation” is one of those Washington priorities, like “security” or “the children,” that politicians in both parties tend to describe as investments rather than spending. Even as budget wars have raged on Capitol Hill, there’s been a fairly broad consensus that funding research and development is vital to American competitiveness.

‘One size fits all’ investing is limiting innovations in East Africa and India

‘One size fits all’ investing is limiting innovations in East Africa and India | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it

If you’ve been reading startup tech blogs and news outlets, you might think it’s an exciting time to be a fintech startup in East Africa and India. There are some notable exits coming out of India, like the 2016 acquisition of Citrus Pay by Naspers’ PayU for $130 million, one of the largest-ever acquisitions for the country’s fintech industry. There is also a narrative, eagerly picked up by tech optimists, about the innovative technologies spreading across Kenya and other East African countries, like Safaricom’s M-Pesa mobile payments platform.

Should You Reinvent An Industry As A Business Idea?

Should You Reinvent An Industry As A Business Idea? | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
No one has ever come up with a business idea entirely by themselves. Mark Zuckerberg revolutionized social media with Facebook, but Facebook was not even the first large social media website. The Bessemer process which made steel magnate Andrew Carnegie rich had been experimented with by other developers in the past, and every successful businessman’s innovations has almost certainly practiced to some degree by someone else.

Why a Robot-Filled Education Future May Not Be as Scary as You Think

Why a Robot-Filled Education Future May Not Be as Scary as You Think | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
The robots are coming, and some of them are charming. That was my reaction on a recent visit to Singularity University, when I met two robots named Pris and Pepper. Even though her “brain” was turned off when I met Pris, she was still able to sit on the floor, cock her head, blink, and follow my words and my body with her head. At times, she would even blink with a tinge of pink in her eyes. The effect was uncanny, engaging, and almost flirtatious.

What are digital social innovations?

What are digital social innovations? | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
One of the problems that we encounter in our research on digital social innovation (DSI) is related with defining it. Is it a catch-all phrase? A combination of three trendy words? Digital social innovations (DSI) are often associated with positive meanings, like openness, collaboration or inclusion, as opposed to more commercially oriented innovations. In trying to define such a contested concept as digital social innovation, we should strive to disentangle it from its positive aura.

The 4 Types of Innovation and the Problems They Solve

One of the best innovation stories I’ve ever heard came to me from a senior executive at a leading tech firm. Apparently, his company had won a million-dollar contract to design a sensor that could detect pollutants at very small concentrations underwater. It was an unusually complex problem, so the firm set up a team of crack microchip designers, and they started putting their heads together.
