Responding to an article on why innovation is difficult, Tim Josling from Leura, Australia, wrote this to the editor of The Economist (January 26, 2013):
Another useful insight is provided by something akin to Amdahl’s law in computer design, which holds that even if some components of a system are improving, the parts that are not improving will eventually dominate the performance of that system.

US Airways and Kimpton Hotels both compete in very crowded market spaces where price can make the difference in a consumer’s final selection. But one of them knows how to move beyond price to compete on experience and the other doesn’t.

A recent study by Andy Cosh and Joanne Jin Zhang of the UK Innovation Research centre set out to examine how companies were using open innovation. The report makes a thought-provoking comparison of the innovation styles of companies. It indicates that those companies that are active in open innovation in both giving and receiving ideas achieve higher rates of innovation and of revenue growth.

A recent trip to Italy meant my first visit to Florence, home of my youngest daughter’s favorite pizza and my oldest daughter’s new leather purse. I'm happy to let you know I've been selected as an "influential" voice - by the American Society for Quality (ASQ). The folks at the ASQ assure me they understand that I'm focused on innovation rather than an expert on quality, and are even ok with the fact that sometimes quality and innovation don't see eye to eye. Niels Diffrient, who passed away last Saturday at 84, is unanimously called the godfather of ergonomics. He championed function and comfort as the most important principles of design--made evident in his love for the umbrella, the pencil, and the Post-it note. Yves Behar has worked with technology entrepreneur Jason Johnson to develop the August Smart Lock, which is opened and closed using a smartphone app. The lock can be installed over existing deadbolts, and uses a Bluetooth connection with smartphones to allow people to lock or unlock doors.
