Another useful insight is provided by something akin to Amdahl’s law in computer design, which holds that even if some components of a system are improving, the parts that are not improving will eventually dominate the performance of that system.

There is no manual that says exactly how to do this or how much you are likely to spend innovating but here is a common sense approach that seems to work well. Imagine that you are a company that needs to introduce 5 new products into the market place. First of all you need to spend some time generating ideas. Without knowing your actual method of idea generation and until you have had time to calibrate your own process then this is a bit of ‘wetted finger in the air’ calculation.

The Human Dimension addresses three main concerns.  First, the talent developed during the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan is bleeding out of the force.  If troop cuts are inevitable, then we should downsize the right people and train others to fill the void.  Second, building adaptive leaders requires smarter training and education.  This goes beyond current practices and focuses more on individual cognitive ability.  Third, leader education must evolve to produce innovative leaders.
