Why a Robot-Filled Education Future May Not Be as Scary as You Think

Why a Robot-Filled Education Future May Not Be as Scary as You Think | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
The robots are coming, and some of them are charming. That was my reaction on a recent visit to Singularity University, when I met two robots named Pris and Pepper. Even though her “brain” was turned off when I met Pris, she was still able to sit on the floor, cock her head, blink, and follow my words and my body with her head. At times, she would even blink with a tinge of pink in her eyes. The effect was uncanny, engaging, and almost flirtatious.

What are digital social innovations?

What are digital social innovations? | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
One of the problems that we encounter in our research on digital social innovation (DSI) is related with defining it. Is it a catch-all phrase? A combination of three trendy words? Digital social innovations (DSI) are often associated with positive meanings, like openness, collaboration or inclusion, as opposed to more commercially oriented innovations. In trying to define such a contested concept as digital social innovation, we should strive to disentangle it from its positive aura.

How Disruptive Innovation Can Finally Revolutionize Healthcare | Innosight

How Disruptive Innovation Can Finally Revolutionize Healthcare | Innosight | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
The discussion around reforming healthcare tends to focus on progress the industry makes against prescribed numbers—lowering the rate of the uninsured, boosting productivity, and improving metrics around new payment models. While these high-level measurements are important for tracking performance, they distract from the understanding of the true causal mechanism of how industries become more affordable and accessible.

The tech world is dominated by some of the most powerful brands in the world. Innovate on Purpose: What accelerates innovation

Lately I've been reading about the efforts to build or create innovation accelerators.  Universities, businesses and even cities and regions are talking about innovation and the need to create accelerators or innovation enablers.  I'm glad that everyone is excited about innovation, and that they want to provide the means to help it flourish and help it move more quickly. But the thing is, like most late arrivals, they've got the wrong end of the stick as the Brits like to say.

Are our cities immortal?

Are our cities immortal? | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
Is the human race destined to expand to point where it becomes impossible to sustain ourselves? The fear of unsustainable growth is often voiced by environmentalists like Naomi Klein and David Attenborough, but it isn’t new. In 1798, Thomas Malthus wrote that “the increase of population is necessarily limited by the means of subsistence”.

The 4 Types of Innovation and the Problems They Solve

One of the best innovation stories I’ve ever heard came to me from a senior executive at a leading tech firm. Apparently, his company had won a million-dollar contract to design a sensor that could detect pollutants at very small concentrations underwater. It was an unusually complex problem, so the firm set up a team of crack microchip designers, and they started putting their heads together.

Tame the Anarchy of Innovation with a Process-Driven Culture

Tame the Anarchy of Innovation with a Process-Driven Culture | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
Almost universally, innovation is regarded as a positive force. In fact, in today’s fast-paced business environment, it’s often considered essential for business survival. For example, consider how many businesses — especially in the technology space — now have a Chief Innovation Officer whose job it is to originate new ideas, while recognizing and fostering innovative ideas generated by others.

National Innovation Systems, Blockchains, and Accelerating Change

One of the topics we’ve been thinking about a lot lately is how the next generation of technological change is now starting to generate what’s likely to be a very large wave.  It’s presently fairly far off the coastline, but when we look out at sea we observe the rising swell that may well become a huge force by the time it hits the beach.

The Cost of Not Innovating

The Cost of Not Innovating | The Jazz of Innovation | Scoop.it
Think of the market leader in almost any market and most likely that company is also the most innovative in the market. Innovation and market leadership go hand in hand and this should be obvious. Market leaders implement new product ideas, service ideas and process ideas first. Followers copy those ideas. Followers are not leaders.
