The art of the pitch: 3 essential tips for winning over your audience | The Jazz of Business | Scoop.it

So you’ve got a startup. How sexy of you, how innovative, how new. Well I hate to burst your bubble but startups are a dime a dozen these days, it’s the new black and wearing it doesn’t make you special. In such a competitive sphere such as the tech scene (in Africa or around the world) being a startup isn’t enough, you have to figure out how to stand out in the crowd.

Killing our Competitive Edge

Killing our Competitive Edge | The Jazz of Business | Scoop.it
The outrage over the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin is a reminder of the continued racial hostilities in the United States. Inequality and racism are toxins in the US ...
Jackie Modeste's insight:

Youth = human capital. When we kill our youth, we kill our competitive edge, ruin our legitimacy in helping to build democracies, andmake a mockery of our efforts to suoprt human rights causes around the world. Women's rights, globally, are linked inextricably, to children. It's time to expand and advance our conversations in these areas.

Barry Schwartz: Our loss of wisdom | Video on TED.com

Barry Schwartz makes a passionate call for "practical wisdom" as an antidote to a society gone mad with bureaucracy. He argues powerfully that rules often fail us, incentives often backfire, and practical, everyday wisdom will help rebuild our world.
Jackie Modeste's insight:

"Practical, everyday wisdom" exists in direct defiance of machine-like systems of efficiency. It take s a great deal of courage to go against the "wisdom" gained via algorithms and policies. Humans must regain faith in themselves.

“Cram schools,” once the cultural domain of Chinese-, Korean- and Russian-American students, have gained traction with non-Asian parents hoping to improve their children’s test scores.
Jackie Modeste's insight:

Sucking the joy out of education, one student at a time. The market for education is not saturated, there's a world of schools available for those inetrsted in learning. On k-12 level focus should be on cultivating a learning environment.

Great idea, holds a lot of promise for moving towards equity in education -- acquisition and achievement. Might also be a good way to improve the waning educational gains of boys, as traditional classroom instruction has often decreased gains.
