Remember grocery-bag book covers that kids decorated themselves? PeeChees with conversion tables on the inside cover? Skate keys?

 

Program a dirge into the iPod for those boomer artifacts and at least one more, say forward-focused educators: paper textbooks.

 

"I think we have seen the last adoption of paper texts. I think students, instead of carrying a 50-pound backpack, will be carrying a small hand-held device," Empire Superintendent Bob Price told district trustees last month.

BUCYRUS -- Aden Britton, 5, carefully unwrapped the gift handed to him Friday at Fazoli's in Ontario.

 

Aden was oblivious to the many eyes upon him as he pulled an iPad out of the wrapping paper.

 

"This is so amazing," said Aden's mom, Liz Morris, as she wiped away tears.

DUNEDIN — The excuse of "the dog ate my homework" won't fly this year at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School, at least not in the sixth grade. Those students, mostly 11 years old, were issued iPads on the first day of school. And come January, all their homework will go digital.

The district is using funds from a bond approved in May 2010 to pay for the devices, as well as build a new elementary school, add on to exisiting schools and expand their technology.

Pupils starting at the Longfield Academy in Kent this September will be doing more of their learning on Apple iPads. The school is one of many around the country to experiment with tablet computers. Announcing the scheme to parents earlier this year, the school said “young people enjoy learning through technology”.

Students at Columbia Independent School sat eagerly in the cafeteria this morning, waiting for teacher “elves” to hand out brand-new iPads.  After each student had an iPad 2 in hand, Upper School Director Doug Sept made the announcement they’d been waiting for: “Ladies and gentleman, turn on your iPads.”

Interactive Elementary, a leading developer of educational application for the iPad, has updated its flagship application, Middle School Math.

 

Included in the free update are two brand new modules as well as updates to the original five modules.  Highlighting the rollout is the Multiple Conveyor (shown in demo video).

 

The app, priced at $3.99, is now available to educational institutions at a half-price.

 

The company plans to add even more activities in the coming months.

SANTA ANA – Mater Dei High School handed out an iPad 2 to every student this week, making the private campus one of Orange County’s first to incorporate the popular tablet into the daily curriculum.

 

About 2,100 students began using this first week of school their new iPads during classroom lessons, in homework assignments and for studying. Mater Dei’s 110 teachers also received their own tablets.

Four Williamson County high schools will pilot a program that will allow students to bring a smartphone, iPad or laptop to school.

 

She needed her upper-level students to have authentic conversations that relied solely on being able to listen and converse with no visual cues — sort of like talking on the telephone — and she needed to be able to grade them, Taylor said.

Anthony Leuck of Berkeley is used to communicating in ways that aren’t quite conventional.

 

The 18-year-old has an undiagnosed disorder that makes speech and muscle control extremely difficult. He interacts through eye gaze, or by tapping his head against a switch on a communication device to spell out words.
