More is not neccesarily good.  That's the message some parents are saying abou the use of iPads in Richland School District Two.

 

Parent Lynn Roth says the district invested millions of dollars into purchasing these iPads which she says contribute to behavioral problems, irregular sleep, and obesity.

The Shasta County Board of Education is looking to Apple to save some trees.

 

"We have been kind of piloting the use of iPads to cut down on the paper for the agendas," said Adam Hillman, associate superintendent of administrative services.

 

Ten staff members at the Shasta County Office of Education already have iPads, and each of the nine board members, including two students, is slated to receive one, he said.

With most schools back in session, students in about 600 districts nationwide will return with a new piece of tech: their own personal Apple iPad.

 

Since the iPad launched last year, some schools have replaced textbooks with E-books. Programs in two thirds of the 600 districts are new for this year; others started these "one-to-one" programs, in which schools provide one iPad for each student, soon after Apple released the tablet in April, 2010.

For incoming freshmen at western Connecticut's suburban Brookfield High School, hefting a backpack weighed down with textbooks is about to give way to tapping out notes and flipping electronic pages on a glossy iPad tablet computer.

 

A few hours away, every student at Burlington High School near Boston will also start the year with new school-issued iPads, each loaded with electronic textbooks and other online resources in place of traditional bulky texts.

Auburn Launches Kindergarten iPad Experiment

Nine years ago Maine became the first state to equip middle school students across the state with laptop computers--a program which has now been expanded to about 50 percent of high schools. Now, in a program which is gaining international attention, one school district has launched a new learning initiative to supply all kindergarteners with iPads. While some have criticized the project as being a waste of money, school officials in Auburn expect the move to boost learning in some key areas.

The Mt. Pleasant school board will look at loosening up its strict policy against using mobile and wireless devices during the school day at Mt. Pleasant High School.

 

“We're fighting a losing battle,” said high school Principal Jennifer Verleger. “Right now, it's not a respectful situation.”

Elizabeth Cohen, Auburn, ME) - A school district in Maine has a unique approach to raising its low test scores, giving an iPad for every kindergartner.

 

The Auburn, ME school district spent more than $200,000 to outfit every one of its 250 kindergarteners with the tablets, along with sturdy cases to protect them.
