Increasing complexity of aesthetic perceptions

Aesthetics is a major area of attention for designers operating from the experiences perspective (UL). Of course, experience is at the root of aesthetic explanations. Aesthetic experience is a response to conditions of beauty. Aesthetics as a study of philosophy is an attempt to explain the human aesthetic experience. The sustainable designer might ask: What if anything is different about aesthetics for Sustainable Design?

The Radical Technology of Christopher Alexander - Metropolis Magazine

The Radical Technology of Christopher Alexander - Metropolis Magazine | The Integral Landscape Café | Scoop.it

Chances are, you have heard of Christopher Alexander because of his most famous book on architecture, A Pattern Language.

Alexander, the mathematician, was always concerned with the processes by which parts transform into wholes. He wants to know how we are implementing this part-whole synthesis; how nature does it; and especially, where we, in our own human version, might be getting it wrong. This is the key to an important realization about natural systems and how they generate form — one that, as Alexander has long noted, is distinct from how we humans typically generate form. And this is not a mere philosophical matter of humans being different from nature, or “having culture.” It’s a question of how we humans can also have a technology that is actually more complex, resilient, and sustainable — quite literally, more life-like.

Common Ground in a Liquid City: Essays in Defense of an Urban Future :: AK Press

Common Ground in a Liquid City: Essays in Defense of an Urban Future :: AK Press | The Integral Landscape Café | Scoop.it

If we want to preserve what's still left of the natural world, we need to stop using so much of it. And cities are the best chance we have left for a sustainable future ... but only if they remain vibrant, dynamic spaces that are unfolded by millions of people working together—and not by master plans and planners. What will it take to make our cities truly sustainable?

In a world where the flow of money and jobs and people is largely determined by the whims of global capital, Matt Hern's Common Ground in a Liquid Cit rey is afreshingly down-to-earth look at the importance of place in the urban future.

Toward a 'living architecture'

Could we use our understanding of chemistry and physics to design building materials that grow, self-repair, and sense the environment around them, opening up a new frontier in green technology? Dr Rachel Armstrong, from the UCL Bartlett School of Architecture, believes such metabolic materials could become a key sustainable technology with the potential to transform the worlds urban environments.

Alex Steffen: The shareable future of cities | Video on TED.com

TED Talk: How can cities help save the future? Alex Steffen shows some cool neighborhood-based green projects that expand our access to things we want and need -- while reducing the time we spend in cars. Interesting concepts: by not stealing the future, selling it now and calling it GDP, says he. Cool concepts, being implemented already right now.

Landscape+Urbanism: Black Rock City

Landscape+Urbanism: Black Rock City | The Integral Landscape Café | Scoop.it

Burning Man: An interesting article making some strange connections between the land of free spiritedness that is Burning Man, specifically the arrangement of the temporary settlement 'Black Rock City' with the ideology of New Urbanism. I can't think of two uniquely different mind-sets and approaches, so find the connection to be somewhat comical - but am keeping an open mind. So read for yourself... and determine perhaps if that next vacant town square surrounded by walk-up townhouses would benefit from an iconic super human sculptural icon that regularly is set aflame.

The website 'Visualizing Sustainability' provides a a collection of images, diagrams and other visual representations of sustainability for use in the classroom. This is a great resource for educators to use as it provides visual cues to prompt discussions and inquiry about sustainability. The collection varies in its complexity from simple diagrams and images for younger grades to more complex ones for the higher grades based around every aspect of sustainability. Teachers can utilize this resources as a means of class discussions, individual analysis, research, etc. The possibilities are endless with an image for any aspect of sustainability to support teaching and learning in the classroom.

This collection of resources aligns with the Australian Curriculum: Technologies and sustainability with an image, diagram, visual prompt to link with any aspect of sustainability for systems, world views and futures as well as design and technologies knowledge and understanding (ACARA, 2014).

Networked_Performance — Art and Sustainability: Connecting Patterns for a Culture of Complexity

Networked_Performance — Art and Sustainability: Connecting Patterns for a Culture of Complexity | The Integral Landscape Café | Scoop.it

What is the cultural dimension of sustainability? This book offers a thought-provoking answer, with a theoretical synthesis on »cultures of sustainability«. Describing how modernity degenerated into a culture of unsustainability, to which the arts are contributing, Sacha Kagan engages us in a fundamental rethinking of our ways of knowing and seeing the world. We must learn not to be afraid of complexity, and to re-awaken a sensibility to patterns that connect. With an overview of ecological art over the past 40 years, and a discussion of art and social change, the book assesses the potential role of art in a much needed transformation process.
