Robin Good: JISC provides a very well documented guide to the use of Creative Commons licences (also referred to as CC licences) which can greatly facilitate the copying, reuse, distribution, and in some cases, the modification of the original owner’s creative work without needing to get permission each time from the original rights holder.

 

In addition to this the correct use and embedding of CC license may greatly help in the effort to make original sources more transparent to the final reader, in many context, including news and content curation efforts of many kinds.

 

Creative Commons licences can be embedded into a variety of resources, such as PowerPoint, images, Word docs, elearning resources, podcasts and other audio visual resources.

 

While specifically prepared for UK public sector organizations this document can be quite useful for anyone interested in the use of CC licenses to distribute digital content online.

 

Key Benefits of embedding CC licences for content curation and attribution:

It can help the user see that the resource is an 'open' resource and licensed under a specific CC licence terms
  It can help reduce the future 'orphan works' (works for which the rights holders are unknown or cannot be traced), and assist in creation of appropriate attribution, citation and potential negotiation for further permissions. By embedding the selected CC licence to the licence details even if the resource gets detached from its metadata. This is particularly the case if the resource is found via a search engine instead of the original website platform which might host specific copyright restrictions.

A Curated Introduction To Curation by Andy Dickinson

Robin Good: Here's another good example of curation at work. Andy Dickinson, has used Storify to create a "curated reference" of his lecture about curation for his first year undergraduate students. 

 

The "storified" reference contains links to tools, video clips, and many contributions which allow any learner interested in this topic, to follow a selected path from which it is possible to wander off and explore in many interesting directions.

Jan Gordon: I selected this wonderful piece by Michael J. Fern of Intigi because it reinforces the importance of curation and has a lot of great insights.

 

In this article the author refers to Robert Scoble, who has built an enormous following on several social networks by curating and sharing the latest news about technology and startups.

 

He says that just like Scobleizer, startups should use curation to catapult their online presence and influence. Curation is a useful approach for all companies but especially for startups:

 

Here's what especially caught my attention:

 

a) Thought Leadership   

If outsiders view your company as a key source of  industry informataion, you will quickly build your brand recognition as well as develop trust and goodwill among customers.

 

b) Hub of Information   

By being first to market as a content curator in your space and by hosting curated content on your website, you can quickly rise as a primary destination site for those interested in your industry.

 

c) Collections    

By creating a bundle of articles, images, videos or websites that relate to a specific them and keeping it updated, this “guide” can become an important resource for social media marketers.

 

d) Content with Commentary    

Using 3rd party articles and adding your own point of view you can build a dedicated following. He refers to Daring Fireball, a blog that has built an impressive loyal following of 30,000

 


One Takeaway: 

Successful curators often employ several of these approaches in addition to producing their own original content

Here's my commentary based on my experience of using Scoopit and Pinterest

 

To me, Pinterest and Scoopit go hand and hand. They are both visual and it's important to consider if you're on Scoopit already or thinking about it, expressing yourself on both platforms, (if it makes sense for your business) because it can be very powerful. 

 

Here are some of the reasons it can help your business:

 

Scoopit is a platform that showcases your expertise, share your hobbies and other interests through content in a beautiful format. It is part of your online personna and it's a vibrant community I have met some wonderful people here.

 

Pinterest is also a community with some of the same people from Scoopit and many others, (new people are joining everyday). Linking your posts from Scoopit to your pins on Pinterest not only drives traffic to your scoopit site and visa versa but those people can see another side of you that you can't express there.

 

Pinterest is like a delicious menu of visuals that captivate and attract people to you. I have put all my business boards at the top and my interest boards underneath them.

 

Pinterest gives people the ability to see who you are beyond your posts. If you're a brand, this is where you can create an online story of text and visuals that gives consumers points of entry through common interests. It's a brilliant way to do business.

 

I could go on and on but I'll let you see for yourself how I've combined Scoopit and Pinterest together which continues to produce unbelievable results, increase in traffic and brand new relationships from both sites.

Great insight, thank you! In the constant stream of innovations - sometimes fads too - it is comforting to find complete write-ups that give enough "meat" to what is going on online, and why some tools get traction.

Robin Good: Timeline is a Javascript open-source solution that allows anyone to create a visual timeline that integrates text, tweets, images, maps, audio recordings and video clips on an infinite scrollable bar. 

 

A project funded by the Knight News Innovation Lab, Timeline works great with stories that have a strong chronological narrative. It does not work well for stories that need to jump around in the timeline.

 

Mashable Sonia Paul writes about it: "Timeline is similar to Storify in that it allows users to aggregate media on the web, it differs in its operation.

 

With Storify, users can drag and drop content into a post.

 

With Timeline, users can either embed the code onto their website using JSON, or — if they don’t want to mess with any coding — they can fill in a ready-made Timeline template on Google Docs.

 

The project is currently hosted on GitHub, and users can find specific directions on how to both embed the code and use the Google Doc template there, too.

 

Future plans for the project include support of more media type, as well as iPhone compatibility, B.C. time support and better seconds and milliseconds support."

Curatr allows professional trainers, experts, and teachers, as much as students to organize and curate information for the purpose of learning.

 

What I like very much is the Curatr promotional video, which says lots of true things about education and about the way we should carry it out in the future. The next-button-robot approach to information memorization needs to be replaced with a new approach: learning to understand how learners construct knowledge.

 

Curatr is about the construction of the scaffolding that allows people to learn and to find the resources that should help them best learn what they are interested into.
