RT @tadawes: For Archivists, ‘Occupy’ Movement Presents New Challenges - Wired Campus - http://t.co/iKpx3Hmg...

By Jeffrey R. Young:

"Howard Besser, a New York University archivist, recently got into a shouting match at an Occupy protest, making a case for why the activists should preserve records of their activities.“Within the Occupy movement there’s a huge suspicion of traditional organizations, including libraries and universities,” Mr. Besser explained Monday at the spring meeting of the Coalition for Networked Information.

The shouting match was an extreme moment, but Mr. Besser and other archivists on a panel here explained that they have had to take unusual steps to try to gather a snapshot for future scholars of the nationwide Occupy protests, which call attention to income inequality in the United States. Those steps—including distributing postcards promoting archiving at protests, developing automated systems to download photos posted online, and asking participants to vote on which images are most important for the historic record—could serve as a model for preserving future events."

Shifting to Net Work

Shifting to Net Work | The Information Specialist's Scoop | Scoop.it

Our first Net Work Literacy session ends this week. There were several reasons why Jane Hart and I decided to offer this two-week online programe. The idea first came to me as I realized how many of my clients and colleagues were not as connected as they could be, too often wasting their time on routine things and not building networks that could help them get work done.

ONCE upon a time, in-house corporate lawyers were dismissed as plodders. Only someone who couldn’t hack it as a legal brain-for-hire would seek the dull security of a salaried job, people assumed.

Knowledge Management is Not Mere Dissemination | Exploring the interactions among public opinion, governance, and the public sphere

Knowledge Management is Not Mere Dissemination | Exploring the interactions among public opinion, governance, and the public sphere | The Information Specialist's Scoop | Scoop.it

Knowledge, or the lack of, is often associated with the success or failure of development initiatives. For decades, communication’s main role was to fill the knowledge gap between what audiences knew and what they needed to know, with the assumption that this would induce change. We now know that this is seldom the case. In the modernization paradigm, media were expected to provide needed knowledge through messages that could fill knowledge gaps, build modern attitudes, and eventually shape behavior...

Our skills at finding, managing and analyzing information are increasingly valued as organizations worldwide struggle to gain insight and make decisions in the face of explosive information growth. In this session, I will present one professional's journey and experiences, as I transitioned from working in traditional library roles to doing strategic analysis for a well-known industrial R&D lab, HP Labs.

Knowledge management in law firms

Knowledge management in law firms | The Information Specialist's Scoop | Scoop.it

New technology and greater awareness mean there is an opportunity to drive the development of knowledge management in law firms...The firm is embracing and endorsing the need to exploit knowledge management. It’s accepted that lawyers need to productively manage what they do during the day, and understood they need to manage what they do with the business of law rather than just in the domain of law. It’s much easier these days to understand knowledge management without talking about it.
