"...the British Library announced in a press release the release of From Dust to Digital: Ten Years of the Endangered Archives Programme. The publication, free to read online, chronicles 19 of the major preservation projects, including monastic manuscripts in Ethiopia, ecclesiastical archives on the history of slavery in Colombia and Brazil, and the sound archives of Radio Télévision Guinée and Iranian Golha radio."

"Polytechnic University will be non-traditional in many ways, but one of the most dramatic alternatives to a typical university setting will be seen in the library. Or, rather, not seen.

When the university opens its doors to students this fall, the library will be almost completely online, although certain hardcover books will be available on an as-needed basis.

Kathryn Miller, director of library services for the school, said the challenge of setting up and planning library services for the polytechnic is a very different and exciting one for her profession, and she is enjoying it. Hired in late January at an annual salary of $95,000, she said it's not every day a librarian has the opportunity to be in on a start-up system like this one.

Her job is to develop and administer library resources and services to support the school's academic programs, faculty teaching and research, and student learning. She will manage budgeting, purchasing and policy development and work to ensure the university's vision aligns with that of the library."

This, alongside the copyright session, was the most meaty in terms of seeing where libraries are currently connecting with MOOCs — as I learned during my investigations, there are a lot of people with opinions about MOOCs and libraries, but not many folks with hands on experience. This session focused on where library research skills fit into MOOCs, where that might take us.

Libraries and information professionals have been adapting to the impact of online resources for some time now. In my own academic library, we have a Mobile Technology Group to monitor developing trends and ensure that staff are equipped to create, access and advise upon anything from Blogs and Instant Messaging; QR codes, Wikis and RFID, to Smart phones and the mobile version of the library website. There is still a physical connection with our users, however, with a campus full of students attending lectures, accessing online resources provided by the library, receiving research advice, making enquiries at service desks, borrowing books and filling every library space when exams and deadlines loom.

The courses are available online 24 hours a day, so fit well into busy schedules, whether that’s college, work, childcare, or a combination of the three.

Universal Class offers a fantastic range of topics, from hobbies to technology, business skills to health. As the courses are free, there’s no risk – members can try something they’ve always wanted to, or something they’ve never thought of. Members can register for up to five courses at once, and there’s no commitment on a course if you change your mind.

Nothing new that the role of the library is changing and that future needs will depend on staying on top of changing research innovations!

Interesting piece about the relationship between researchers and librarians - I think we'll be around for a while yet though encouraging other researchers to reach the heights of this one. The author makes no mention of library subscriptions- I wonder if he accesses recommended articles via this avenue at all.

"Past issues of IPN now available

IFLA is very happy to announce that all remaining past issues of the International Preservation News (IPN) have been digitised by the Preservation and Conservation Centre at the Library of Congress. IFLA would like to thank the Library of Congress for digitising these early editions of IPN and making them available to IFLA. The IPN archive of over 60 past issues is now complete and freely available online. We encourage everyone to re-discover these past issues of IPN, an important series that was published by IFLA for over 25 years with regular contributions from PAC Regional Centres. IPN ceased publication in December 2013. The IFLA Journal is picking up the mandate of IPN and will publish an issue dedicated to Cultural Heritage in its 3rd volume of 2015."

"For over 15 years, the Lionel Pincus & Princess Firyal Map Division at the New York Public Library has been scanning maps from all over the world including those of the Mid-Atlantic United States from 16th to 19th centuries and even topographic maps of Austro-Hungarian empire ranging from 1877 and 1914.

Most notably, the NYPL has scanned more than 10,300 maps from property, zoning, and topographic atlases of New York City dating from 1852 to 1922.

There's also a "diverse collection of more than 1,000 maps of New York City, its boroughs and neighborhoods, dating from 1660 to 1922, which detail transportation, vice, real estate development, urban renewal, industrial development and pollution, political geography among many, many other things," NYPL posted in late March on its blog.

These and many more of the 20,000 cartographic works scanned are now available as high-resolution downloads for anyone who wants to visit their site."
