Library Journal Delivering the Library Library Journal Bookmobiles, like the library systems they serve, have been in a state of transformation for quite some time. As with libraries in general, public perception sometimes lingers on the nostalgic past, while in fact today’s bookmobile services are focused firmly on the future. “We are all doing the same thing, even though we all do it differently. We all have the same goal, which is outreach,” says Martha Buckner, Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services (ABOS) president. It’s hard to pin down exactly how many bookmobiles are currently in operation throughout the United States. The most recent data from the National Center for Educational Statistics lists 864, with Kentucky (98) and California (69) leading the way. But that data has not been updated in recent years.
