As the world's data grow exponentially, organizations across all sectors, including government and not-for-profit, need to understand, manage and use big, complex data sets—known as big data, a term spreading through forward-thinking business dialogue and building job market demand. Data science is the answer to optimizing (or, for starters, simply dealing with) big data. However, the iSchool’s distinct perspective approaches data science with a view of the full data life cycle, going beyond what most discuss as data analytics. iSchool Offering Open Online Course In Applied Data Science Earlier this year, the iSchool successfully ran its first introductory-level MOOC—the popular term for free, massive, open, online courses. Its next offering, called Applied Data Science: An Introduction, introduces similar content in a new format: self-guided learning. Participants will be able to work their way through the course at their own pace without the constraints of deadlines. This course is free of charge and a select number of participants will be invited to try it on October 28. Successfully completed MOOC coursework results in a certificate of completion. I wanted to put out a call – as i have done before – for additions to the “Context Book” assignment. We’ll use this in the MOOC and in our regular SLIS class. What socio-technical titles would you add to this list?"

This, alongside the copyright session, was the most meaty in terms of seeing where libraries are currently connecting with MOOCs — as I learned during my investigations, there are a lot of people with opinions about MOOCs and libraries, but not many folks with hands on experience. This session focused on where library research skills fit into MOOCs, where that might take us.

About the Class Libraries have existed for millennia, but today the library field is searching for solid footing in an increasingly fragmented (and increasingly digital) information environment. What is librarianship when it is unmoored from cataloging, books, buildings, and committees? The vision for a new librarianship must go beyond finding library-related uses for information technology and the Internet; it must provide a durable foundation for the field. New Librarianship recasts librarianship and library practice using the fundamental concept that knowledge is created though conversation. New librarians approach their work as facilitators of conversation; they seek to enrich, capture, store, and disseminate the conversations of their communities. Join iSchool faculty for this online course that provides a foundation for practicing librarians and library science students in new librarianship. It builds on The Atlas of New Librarianship, the 2012 ABC CLIO/Greenwood Award for the Best Book in Library Literature and seeks to generate discussion about the future direction of the profession. Coming in July The course will be offered in a guided mode from July 8 to August 4. After that month the class will be opened online, but CEU or academic credit options will no longer be available.

Libraries and information professionals have been adapting to the impact of online resources for some time now. In my own academic library, we have a Mobile Technology Group to monitor developing trends and ensure that staff are equipped to create, access and advise upon anything from Blogs and Instant Messaging; QR codes, Wikis and RFID, to Smart phones and the mobile version of the library website. There is still a physical connection with our users, however, with a campus full of students attending lectures, accessing online resources provided by the library, receiving research advice, making enquiries at service desks, borrowing books and filling every library space when exams and deadlines loom.

This week: “What’s next for MOOCs?”, those online courses that have thrown a techno-bomb at traditional higher education. Here, a primer to catch you up if you’ve somehow managed to miss catching MOOC madness:

“MOOC,” or Massive Online Open Course, refers to a large online class open to an unlimited number of people. Dave Cormier from the University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown, Canada and Bryan Alexander from the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education in Georgetown, Texas, are credited with coining the phrase in 2008. The first known MOOC was “Connectivism and Connective Knowledge,” taught by Stephen Downes and George Siemens in partnership with the University of Manitoba in Canada."

With the growing embrace of technology into education, there emerges a whole bunch of new concepts and technical terminology in the teaching and learning literature to the point that it becomes cumbersome to keep track of the novelties in this field. Sometimes the lines are blurred and you can not even differentiate between one concept and the other as is the case between flipped classroom and blended learning. The list of such technical terminology is growing bigger and bigger and now we have : virtual classroom,, MOOCs, Asynchronous learning, virtual learning environment, Online Lab, to mention but some.

"Online learning, in the form of massive open online courses, or MOOCs, has become a massive business. At the university level, there’s EdX, Udacity, and of course, Coursera. One of Coursera’s cofounders, Daphne Koller, is a computer scientist at Stanford, who until recently, was best known for her research on artificial intelligence and machine learning. Coursera, however, is about human learning. The platform makes classes at the nation’s top universities available online, to anyone, for free. Students can earn certificates, and the company is working toward translating those certificates into course credit, that can be transferred into degree-seeking programs. In the meantime, with keyboard biometrics and detailed logging of each click, Coursera plans to use its troves of data to better understand how people learn. Within 5 years, Koller says, Coursera will have the curriculum of a medium to large university.  From LAUNCH Education & Kids, check out this fantastic interview."

MOOCs and Libraries: the good, the bad and the uglyFriday July 12th, 2013 - Pullman Hotel, Central LondonThis one day event hosted by the Open University Library in partnership with OCLC Research and Jisc will focus on the challenges MOOCs pose to the traditional delivery of library services, and the opportunities they offer for libraries to rethink and revitalise their proposition. Participants will be brought up to speed with the latest MOOC developments around the world, but with a particular emphasis on developments in the UK. What emerging trends are changing library services? What does the connected world of "continuous computing" mean for 21st Century libraries? The Hyperlinked Library MOOC offered by the School of Library and Information Science at San José State University provides a roadmap toward becoming a participatory, interactive, user-centered library.

The Hyperlinked Library MOOC is a professional development opportunity designed for information professionals and those interested in the topic. The MOOC is not offered for academic credit. SJSU SLIS graduate students who participate in the MOOC will not receive credit toward their master's degrees.

The Chronicle’s recent article on plagiarism accusations in Coursera courses kicked off my exploration into MOOCs and the role librarians can play. A recent RUSA post on Chasing Reference points to the lack of research assignments in MOOCs and the need for embedded librarians. Even though students enrolled in a MOOC do not typically have access to the parent institution’s fee-based library resources, information literacy and research skills can still be taught and are an important component in courses that ask students to explore complex issues and social problems. Simply providing students with a reading list is not going to teach them to be savvy information consumers who can effectively find authoritative information and critically evaluate sources. So, what’s our first step?

Librarians should  join a  MOOC.
