This study reports on the results of interviews conducted in December 2009 and January 2010 to identify innovative service trends in library and information services in the government and corporate arenas. The study was undertaken as part of a Library and Archives Canada (LAC) research project to inform the Government of Canada Assistant Deputy Ministers Task Force (ADM Task Force) on the Future of Federal Library Service in gaining a better understanding of future-oriented service delivery models adopted by corporate and government libraries."

 

"The interview structure matched the “building blocks” for service models defined by the ADM Task Force—E-Library, E-Services, Digitization, Physical Space, Technology, and Procurement—and probed the specific services that the interviewees offer in each .” This structure was also used to frame the findings."

"E-book collections are booming at public libraries across Ventura County and the nation, but they’re also the subject of a struggle between libraries and the publishing industry.

Concerned about their bottom lines, four of the nation’s largest publishers refuse to sell their e-book catalogs to libraries, and the two others charge extra or limit lending for digital volumes, library officials say. Known as the "Big Six," these publishers are responsible for many of the popular books published nationwide.

Many public libraries lease their e-books through a single distributor, Ohio-based Overdrive, and some librarians worry about paying for electronic volumes they don’t own and can’t share among facilities like they can with print books.

These challenges are among the hottest topics in the library world, but Camarillo librarian Barbara Wolfe said she isn’t sure how much patrons know about the issue.

"I think people will be concerned once they learn about it — those people who cherish libraries and what libraries stand for," Wolfe said.

All businesses are going through reinvention, telling the right stories to connect with their audiences in a new way is crucial. 

 

This is a review by my curating buddy Jan Gordon. I couldn't have said it better myself! Enjoy her review:

 

Here are some highlights:

 

**Stories are the new currency in digital marketing, as digital media allow consumers a surfeit of channels to listen to and engage on.

 

**Consumers want to be engrossed and entertained, and as with other entertainment media, they expect a story.

 

But stories are not just entertaining.

 

**Stories are useful, descriptive, beautiful, interesting: shareable.

 

**Shareable, and participatory: when your audience shares your content, they often add their perspective to it, adding social credence that can further enhance its relevance

 

**The iconic marketing goal of the social media era is ‘viral’ content – a video, photo or other content that spreads like a virus from host to host, making millions of people laugh, cry or think.

 

**But one must consider how many of those attempts at ‘viral’ marketing have succeeded.

 

**On a Wikipedia list of the most viral internet memes very few of them are associated with a brand and those that are were almost always created by a third party or viewed as a public joke.

 

**Trying to produce a viral internet meme is like trying to stand up on a water slide. The chances that you will fall flat on your face and look pretty silly in the process are very high.

 

**Rather than attempting to create ‘viral’ content, marketers should aim for ‘shareable’ content. That is, content that genuinely affects their target demographic; content that addresses real problems or communicates similar ideals.

There are few things so captivating, so memorable, as a good story.  Change is empowered by sharing examples of what works, or what changes feature quick wins.  Digital marketers are the purveyors.  


What is really needed are change leaders who stir the mix so the stories come forward.  Change Leaders champion the best stories and shape their cultures with them.  ~  Deb

"As researchers use materials in libraries, their actions tend to generate records—research trails in digital databases, lists of borrowed books, and correspondence with librarians. Most of the time, these records are innocuous, but to facilitate freedom of inquiry, librarians generally hold these records as confidential. This confidentiality is especially important in law libraries because legal matters can be very sensitive and stressful. Researchers implicitly trust librarians with at least hints of concerns the researchers would prefer not be generally known. If researchers knew any records of their questions could become known to others, some researchers would avoid using library collections or asking librarians for advice, guidance that very well may help them find valuable information.

In her interesting post, Meg Leta points out that, despite some exhortations that information on Web lasts forever, most information now online will disappear at some point. Websites go down when their owners fail to pay hosting fees. Data is deleted, either by purpose or mistake. A file sitting on a drive or disc will, without maintenance, eventually becomes inaccessible because the storage media has decayed or because the hardware and software needed to read the file has become obsolete. Since information will tend to vanish without action on our part, Leta suggests we should instead focus on actively saving information that is worth keeping.

Leta makes an excellent point, but I’d suggest that in addition to thinking carefully about what information needs to be kept, legal professionals also should consider whether certain types of information warrant purposeful destruction. I’d also suggest that for law libraries, patrons should be given the ability to retain, either through the library or themselves, records of their use of library resources."

These billion dollar entities can decide whether they want a price war on digital goods to promote their platforms. That’s the marketing world the publishers face. It’s time they should get used to it. Consumers are buying Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. Content, sadly, is secondary."

Oxford's Bodleian Libraries and the Vatican's Biblioteca Apostolica plan to digitise 1.5 million ancient texts to make them available online.

 

"The Chancellor of the University of Oxford, Lord Patten of Barnes, said: 'We are very grateful to Dr Polonsky for his insight into the importance of widening access to the fundamental texts which have had a major impact on the development of civilisation.

"By making these collections available online we give the wider public access to a small, but significant part of the world's heritage.'"

In one sense, e-books have changed very little about what libraries do or how we do it; they just allow us to deliver a basic library service in a different medium. Some people have said that e-books are “killing” the printed book or that they spell the end of libraries, but that hasn’t been my experience. To my mind, the e-book is not “killing” the printed book, just supplementing it. We are still buying physical books in large quantities and I expect that we will continue to do so for a long time. I would go so far as to say that I doubt the physical book will ever completely go away. Even if it does, libraries are more about information-sharing than about lending physical items; handling e-books may mean changes in some of our procedures but I don’t think that libraries will cease to exist when the e-book predominates."

"After learning about a law in Arizona that has gotten books about Mexican-American history banned from classrooms, a group of Houstonians responded by collecting over 1,000 of the banned books, packing them in cars and taking them in a caravan across Texas and New Mexico to Tucson, Arizona.
Known as “librotraficantes,” or book traffickers, a group led by Houston Community College professor and author Tony Diaz has taken it upon itself to help the students in Arizona to have access to the books that have been part of their school district’s curriculum for years.
In 2010 Arizona passed House Bill 2281 that specifies that public school courses must not teach material that conflicts with the United States government."
