Transforming Life After 50: Public Libraries and Baby Boomers ...

"Recognizing that many current adult and senior library services do not reflect the character or interests of today’s “boomer” generation, the IMLS Western Regional Fellowship: Transforming Life After 50 (TLA50) helps to effectively position public libraries as a resource that can help adults (ages 50+) remain vital and contributing members of their communities."

Now Proven! Using Twitter At Conferences Increases Attendee Engagement, by Jeff Hurt

Now Proven! Using Twitter At Conferences Increases Attendee Engagement, by Jeff Hurt | The Information Professional | Scoop.it

"Twitteracy: Tweeting Improves Learning And Engagement
Education Professor Christine Greenhow, Michigan State University, conducted a study on Twitter as a new form of literacy (http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/00131725.2012.709032).

Her results showed that adults who tweet during a class and as part of the instruction:

are more engaged with the course content
are more engaged with the instructor
are more egaged with other students
and have higher grades than the other students.
“Tweeting can be thought of as a new form of literacy,” Greenhow said. “The students get more engaged because they feel it is connected to something real, that it’s not just learning for the sake of learning. It feels authentic to them.”

Information Literacy Weblog: The Road to Information Literacy: Librarians as Facilitators of Learning

Information Literacy Weblog: The Road to Information Literacy: Librarians as Facilitators of Learning | The Information Professional | Scoop.it

"The Road to Information Literacy: Librarians as Facilitators of Learning http://t.co/EHgdAI95..."

Sheila Webber:

The Road to Information Literacy: Librarians as Facilitators of Learning was a conference that took place last week in Tampere, Finland, as a pre-conference satellite of the IFLA conference. You can see what the programme was on the website here:

http://iflasatellitetampere2012.wordpress.com/programme/

(The photo of Tampere is by tempuu_ on Flickr)

One of the impressive feats was to get the published proceedings produced by the time of the conference, although it is a bit pricey (Euro 99.95):
Gwyer, R., Stubbings, R, and Walton, G. (2012) The Road to Information Literacy: Librarians as facilitators of learning. The Hague: De Gruyter. IFLA Publications 157.
ISBN: 978-3-11-028100-2. The information is here:http://www.degruyter.com/view/product/181777

Law Librarian Blog: Digital Access Isn't Everything: Digital Access Isn't Everything.

There is a great article in the Chronicle of Higher Education (subscription required) by Brian Cowan, 'Digital Natives' Aren't Necessarily Digital Learners, which takes on the concept of digital natives as digital learners, and concludes that while technology may deliver information in convenient ways, it will not necessarily motivate individuals to learn.

Cowan describes four myths of digital learning:

Myth 1: Digital natives are automatically digital learners.

Myth 2: Students prefer using technology to learn.

Myth 3: Cyberspace is the new classroom.

Myth 4: Today's students are multitaskers.

A Must Have App Evaluation Rubric

A Must Have App Evaluation Rubric | The Information Professional | Scoop.it
"The choice of which apps to use with your students in the classroom is not an easy one. It ,in fact , calls for a lot of attention from the part of the teacher. You are responsible for your students learning and this responsibility grows riskier when learning becomes digitally based. This is particularly the case when integrating apps into your teaching."
Via Ove Christensen, Dr. Laura Sheneman
Karen du Toit's insight:

Valuable for librarians when asked or consulted about the use of apps in learning/teaching!

Cristian Cerda's comment, December 8, 2012 8:32 PM
Interesting application, but the content has the same trouble that many of the rubric available on the web: It says nothing:
Ove Christensen's comment, December 9, 2012 6:38 AM
Well I think you should see it as a help for reflection on apps and use of apps. No tools are doing the hard work for you but they help you to remember what to cover.
Jim Lerman's comment, December 9, 2012 5:44 PM
@Cristian...I don't see it the same way. The criteria, in my opinion, do provide a useful framework for judging the efficacy of a web app. The value in the criteria is implicit; if one shares the values inherently stated in the criteria (for example, "authentic practice of targeted skills"), then I think the criteria are indeed helpful. If the values and meaning of the criteria do no speak to you, the reader, then I can see where one could feel they do not say anything. As Ove says, "no tools are doing the hard work for you."

Re-designing spaces for learning | Connected Principals, by @Sharris

Re-designing spaces for learning | Connected Principals, by @Sharris | The Information Professional | Scoop.it

Sharris: "This is a copy of a my guest blog post published this week for the World Innovation Summit for Education - WISE, Qatar - on re-designing spaces for learning..."

http://www.wise-qatar.org/content/stephen-harris-redesigning-spaces-around-collaborative-teaching ;

"There is a clear movement occurring in education globally right now – a movement that is seeking to shift the epicentre of educational paradigms from an industrial-era experience to something more relevant to the ever changing and dynamic contexts of the 21st century. In the first decade of this new century, much great work has been done articulating what 21st century skills might be – www.p21.org is a great example of this.

My focus is the key importance of spatial awareness in redesigning spaces for learning. I hope the second decade of this century will be marked by an awareness that redesigning spaces will be as important to change processes, as describing the new skills deemed necessary for learning and career creation in the last decade. I will focus on our journey of change as a case study for education redesign."
