In the case of e-book lending, the model that prevails in Sweden was drafted over a decade ago by representatives from the library sector and the Association of Swedish Publishers. Whilst the dominant model internationally is based on the idea of licensing ‘copies’ of e-books, in Sweden the library treats e-books as a ‘service’ with titles available concurrently to any number of patrons, for free. In Sweden you never have to wait for an e-book to become ‘available’ which of course means you can borrow as many as you want, simultaneously.

"... to the Parliamentary Select Committee's 'Inquiry into the 21st Century Learning Environments and Digital Literacy' with a submission that touched on a number of areas. One area that has really stuck with me is the point raised about how important the school library is, and will remain to be, within our 21st century learning environments. See the excerpts below:

From the written submission:

The traditional school library building would be a good place to start in the re-visioning process - a secondary school library presents the perfect environment for a shared learning environment that could be redeveloped to provide resources (books and Digital) ICT, media and production tools and spaces. 

and from the oral submission:

We need to see libraries as a strategic place to start this shift for all schools by ensuring that schools get the advice, guidance and funding they need to transform traditional libraries into multi-media multi-purpose learning commons and information centres. This would be a pragmatic way of ensuring all NZ students were able to access digital resources within a “21st Century Learning Environment” and therefore able to develop their digital competencies with an educational context."

Well I think you should see it as a help for reflection on apps and use of apps. No tools are doing the hard work for you but they help you to remember what to cover.

@Cristian...I don't see it the same way. The criteria, in my opinion, do provide a useful framework for judging the efficacy of a web app. The value in the criteria is implicit; if one shares the values inherently stated in the criteria (for example, "authentic practice of targeted skills"), then I think the criteria are indeed helpful. If the values and meaning of the criteria do no speak to you, the reader, then I can see where one could feel they do not say anything. As Ove says, "no tools are doing the hard work for you."
