by TONIA MOXLEYWelcome to the modern research university library, where new skills and even new spaces are being developed to serve the needs of scholars, scientists and students working in the digital age. From a digital-ready classroom to furniture reminiscent of the starship Enterprise, library officials say they are developing new ways to serve the campus, and the public. As libraries transform for the digital age, “it’s an exciting time,” said Judy Ruttenberg of the Association of Research Libraries, a membership and advocacy organization for 125 of the nation’s largest research libraries, including the Library of Congress. “When university libraries housed large print collections and people had to come there to use them, that was a different model. Now students, scholars and researchers have many options, and the library serves in a different way,” Ruttenberg said. To keep libraries relevant amid the rapid expansion of Web-based information, Tech officials are using architects and student advisory committees to develop spaces and services that draw the campus into the library.

by Stephanie Bonjack Here’s my theory: the proliferation of "shoppes" and "towne centers" may have satisfied a need (or collective desire) for designer sunglasses, fusion restaurants, and relaxing places to drink coffee, but commercial spaces will never satisfy all of the needs that a library can address. A great library has the potential to serve as a community hub, where resources and services intersect with work, learning, and culture. A space designed to facilitate such interactions while making the patron feel something – inspired, creative, curious – cannot be replicated commercially. ...new libraries serve as centers of discovery and communication–places where people gather and where information comes alive through teaching and personal interaction. Indeed, to distinguish themselves in a world where Google is well on its way to digitally scanning most of the books ever written, libraries are learning to take advantage of the simple fact that they are centrally located in almost every community. In other words, libraries now see success being linked to their role as public places and destinations.

SmartPlanet's C.C. Sullivan looks at libraries across the country to assess the new scheme for the New York Public Library by Foster and Partner.
The scheme, first reported today by Robin Pogrebin at The New York Times, reinvents the library’s closed-off, seven-floor stacks as “a major new contemporary library within Carrère & Hastings’s neo-Classical one.” Tall windows will open to Bryant Park in a soaring new atrium, reached by a grand circulation zone opening through the middle of the building. The original designs notoriously offered to relocate all the stacks’ books to an inaccessible warehouse in New Jersey. Yet the new plan still decimates the collection, hauling away 25% of the books that are now within the community’s reach. Via Doug Mirams

"Both architects and librarians must answer the question of how we can integrate information architecture with physical architecture, according to Tula Giannini, PhD., Dean and Professor, School of Information & Library Science, Pratt Institute, who considers herself a “digital scholar.” These days, everyone wants to capture information with their cameras and scanners, and she believes that libraries should support that creative process. Carol A. Mandel, Dean of the Division of Libraries, New York University, believes that ultimately, “a library is about connecting people with knowledge, and that’s what architects should design for, whether that means books or digital files.” All panelists agreed with Holl’s assessment that a library “doesn’t have to look like a library, but it should be an inspiring space.” Delete the scoop?
