The impact of open access on librarians | by Fin Galligan, SwetsBlog

The impact of open access on librarians | by Fin Galligan, SwetsBlog | The Information Professional | Scoop.it
Exploring the potential impact of open access on the librarian and their role within the institution.

"...the future of open access for libraries will involve:

More advanced discovery services
Communication, training and networking with own institutional community
Repository building and curation
And to further summarise the above, they all point at developing a strong(er) service culture to look at end-users’ needs directly, rather than focusing on pure collection building. Not by coincidence, these themes are echoed in a paper presented in May 2012 by Lorcan Dempsey (Vice President and Chief Strategist at OCLC), which are nicely summarized on the OCLC’s website. It is easy to apply each of these points to the current and future OA landscape:

“Education, local government, and publishing are being reshaped by economic and networking pressures. Changes here will increasingly drive library changes and libraries need to understand those environments.
Libraries continue to shift from a collection-based view to a service-based view, with deeper engagement with the research, learning and information behaviors of their users.
Community engagement drives the need for new skills, more responsive organizational structures, and a readiness to reallocate resources to important areas.”

IGF Baku - Digital Inclusion and Public Access to the Internet (6th November 2012, Workshop 130) | IFLA

IGF Baku - Digital Inclusion and Public Access to the Internet (6th November 2012, Workshop 130) | IFLA | The Information Professional | Scoop.it

"IFLA, together with Electronic Information for Libraries (EIFL) and the Internet Society (ISOC) will hold a workshop during this year''s Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Baku, Azerbaijan. The workshop will highlight the importance of libraries for guaranteeing public access to the internet and the essential role libraries are playing in this. Every day, the world's 230,000 public libraries play a key role in enabling tens of millions of users to access up to date and crucial information through the Internet. You can find further information on this in the background brief.

The workshop is intended to further develop the conversation surrounding libraries as agents for development, and to raise awareness within the IGF's multistakeholder community that libraries are the perfect partner to solve the problem of digital inclusion.

If you are not in Baku, the good news is that you can still join and actively participate in the workshop via remote participation where you can add your questions and comments. We look forward to your active input in the session. If you are in Baku for the IGF, please come and join the discussion in Workshop 130 (6th November, Room 7, 14.30pm Baku time)."

E-books in Libraries: A Briefing Document developed in preparation for a Workshop on E-Lending in Libraries | Berkman Center

By David O'Brien:

"Beginning with a brief overview of the history and the current state of the e-book publishing market, the document traces the structure of the licensing practices and business models used by distributors to make e-books available in libraries, and identifies select challenges facing libraries and publishers. Where possible, we have made an effort to incorporate stakeholder perspectives and real-world examples to connect analysis to the actual questions, issues, and challenges that arise in practice. The document concludes with a number of informative resources – including news articles, whitepapers, stakeholder and trade association reports, and other online sources – that might inform future conversations, investigations, pilot projects, and best practices in this space."
