The impact of open access on librarians | by Fin Galligan, SwetsBlog

The impact of open access on librarians | by Fin Galligan, SwetsBlog | The Information Professional | Scoop.it
Exploring the potential impact of open access on the librarian and their role within the institution.

"...the future of open access for libraries will involve:

More advanced discovery services
Communication, training and networking with own institutional community
Repository building and curation
And to further summarise the above, they all point at developing a strong(er) service culture to look at end-users’ needs directly, rather than focusing on pure collection building. Not by coincidence, these themes are echoed in a paper presented in May 2012 by Lorcan Dempsey (Vice President and Chief Strategist at OCLC), which are nicely summarized on the OCLC’s website. It is easy to apply each of these points to the current and future OA landscape:

“Education, local government, and publishing are being reshaped by economic and networking pressures. Changes here will increasingly drive library changes and libraries need to understand those environments.
Libraries continue to shift from a collection-based view to a service-based view, with deeper engagement with the research, learning and information behaviors of their users.
Community engagement drives the need for new skills, more responsive organizational structures, and a readiness to reallocate resources to important areas.”

A Must Have App Evaluation Rubric

A Must Have App Evaluation Rubric | The Information Professional | Scoop.it
"The choice of which apps to use with your students in the classroom is not an easy one. It ,in fact , calls for a lot of attention from the part of the teacher. You are responsible for your students learning and this responsibility grows riskier when learning becomes digitally based. This is particularly the case when integrating apps into your teaching."
Via Ove Christensen, Dr. Laura Sheneman
Karen du Toit's insight:

Valuable for librarians when asked or consulted about the use of apps in learning/teaching!

Cristian Cerda's comment, December 8, 2012 8:32 PM
Interesting application, but the content has the same trouble that many of the rubric available on the web: It says nothing:
Ove Christensen's comment, December 9, 2012 6:38 AM
Well I think you should see it as a help for reflection on apps and use of apps. No tools are doing the hard work for you but they help you to remember what to cover.
Jim Lerman's comment, December 9, 2012 5:44 PM
@Cristian...I don't see it the same way. The criteria, in my opinion, do provide a useful framework for judging the efficacy of a web app. The value in the criteria is implicit; if one shares the values inherently stated in the criteria (for example, "authentic practice of targeted skills"), then I think the criteria are indeed helpful. If the values and meaning of the criteria do no speak to you, the reader, then I can see where one could feel they do not say anything. As Ove says, "no tools are doing the hard work for you."

10 Learning Paradigms that can be implemented by Teacher Librarians

10 Learning Paradigms that can be implemented by Teacher Librarians | The Information Professional | Scoop.it

"Much has been written about the role of Teacher Librarians in our schools.   Sadly though, much of it is lamentations about the decreasing numbers of Teacher Librarians manning our school libraries."

"An expectation that teachers engage in professional learning programs is now well cemented into our schools. Time and space must be set aside within the busy school week for teachers to learn, play, experiment and most of all think how newly acquired skills can be embedded into their day-to-day teaching. The experience, know-how and skill among the many talented Teacher Librarians in our schools can easily be harnessed by school administrations to help develop new approaches to professional learning programs.

These programs could incorporate any or all of the following features:

Focused group learning

Cluster learning

Hands on learning

Open ended learning

Non demanding learning

Meaningful learning

Lifelong learning

Reflective learning

Self-paced learning

Online learning

Michelle Duffy:

Author shares her experiences with a library-building project in Lusaka, Zambia.

"The library we funded is so much more than “just” a library it is also a literacy and literacy education program for the teachers, children and parents associated with this school. Room to Read trains the teachers and a parent representative on how to manage the library and how to catalog books and operate a check-out system. The program funds a literacy teacher who integrates library time into the school day for all children. The kids can come to school early or stay late just to read."
