The programmes that made the award possible: 1. Future Leaders of America's Gulf, or FLAG, is an innovative program for teens that the Library System helped implement. The nonprofit organization is a leadership and environmental group for teenagers who advocate and educate for the future of Louisiana's coast and address issues facing the state. 2. “Tools for Teachers,” a series of workshops developed by the Library System's reference staff to help teachers meet their grade-level expectations for their classrooms. San Antonio Public Library Wins Urban Libraries Council Top Innovator by the Urban Libraries Council"The San Antonio Public Library has been named a 2012 Top Innovator by the Urban Libraries Council (ULC) for its health and wellness partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank. The awards were announced on June 22 at the ULC Annual Forum in Newport Beach, California. Library Director, Ramiro S. Salazar attended the conference and accepted the award in person on behalf of the Library and the Food Bank. The award recognizes the San Antonio Public Library’s program to provide area teens with nutrition education, better food choices, cooking classes, and summertime meals and snacks – information that could be crucial to residents of a city facing all the issues arising from a growing obesity problem. The healthy eating program content was based on the ideas and recommendations that came out of regular discussions with teens. As a result of those discussions, the Library’s Teen Services department enlisted the skills and expertise of staff at the San Antonio Food Bank, which provided a licensed nutritionist who supplied guidance to teens and librarians and taught them about making healthy meal choices that would appeal to a teen’s palate." "Axiell presents award to the Digital Cultural Institution of 2011. The winner, Jönköping School Library Service, Sweden, was chosen for its tremendous success...
UK and Scandinavian cultural services and technology expert, Axiell, regularly presents an award to recognise the Digital Cultural Institution of the Year. This year the award was presented at its prestigious two-day symposium ‘Rethinking Libraries?’, held in London on 2-3 November, for senior managers from archives, museums and libraries across Scandinavia and the UK.
The 2011 theme for the award was “going digital to increase value for end users”.
"The winner, Jönköping School Library Service, Sweden, was chosen for its tremendous success in enabling students, teachers and parents to work digitally 24/7 through its use of Axiell Arena’s library web portal to develop an online digital knowledge bank and to support learning in innovative ways. In the proposal it was mentioned that the school library service in Jönköping has been a front runner and the first school system to develop its services in such an innovative way."

Last week, Caroline Kennedy was the keynote speaker at the Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award Ceremony in New York City. Librarians: "Professionals who are excited about their changing role in a changing world - who are dedicated to serving others, who respect scholarship, and who understand that you are our guides on a life long journey of intellectual collaboration and collaborative composition. Your work is truly life changing" As Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote so many years ago, ”Be a little careful about your library. Do you foresee what you will do with it? Very little to be sure. But the real question is, 'What will it do with you?' You will come here and get books that will open your eyes, and your ears, and your curiosity, and turn you inside out or outside in.” Delete the scoop?

"The librarians at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) wanted to better serve the students with visual impairments at their university. In collaboration with the EIFL-FOSS programme, they formed a partnership with UZ’s Disability Resource Centre (DRC) to implement real solutions resulting in increased access to online resources for the UZ’s students with disabilities. Their success was recognized by the Zimbabwe Ministry of Public Affairs, and the project has been nominated for a UN award."
