"Abstract

The archival profession has long attempted to define what constitutes a professional archivist. These debates over education, training, and certification have lasted decades, however few studies have been completed on how the employment market for archivists has changed in response to these professional challenges. This study looks at almost a thousand professional archivist job advertisements between late 2006 and early 2014 to understand the current prevailing recruitment criteria. It is broader in scope and time period than other recent studies. Overall, the market was determined to be mostly stable during the study period.

 

Conclusion:

 

Future studies of archivist job advertisements, as well as larger studies of archivists (such as A*CENSUS), would lead to a increased understanding of the profession. This information would also aid archivists themselves, by providing benchmarks to advocate for themselves and their institutions."

American Archive of Public Broadcasting - Local Radio and Television Records from Public Media Stations Across the Country Made Available to the Public

"The American Archive of Public Broadcasting (AAPB), a collaboration between the Library of Congress, WGBH Boston and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, launched a new website at americanarchive.org today, providing the public with access to a collection of American public radio and television content dating back to the 1950s. These audio and video materials, created by more than 120 public broadcasting organizations across the country, have now been digitized and preserved, and will be a resource for scholars, researchers, educators, filmmakers and the general public to delve into the rich history of public broadcasting across America.

The website will initially provide access to 2.5 million inventory records created during the American Archive Content Inventory Project. The records will provide information about which public media video and audio materials have been digitized and preserved in the AAPB, indicate which video and audio files are available for research on location at WGBH and the Library of Congress, and highlight the participating stations. Contributing stations’ histories, information about significant productions and resources for participating organizations will be available online.

The collection includes interviews and performances by local and national luminaries from a broad variety of professions and cultural genres. Just a few examples of the items in the collection include: Iowa Public Television’s interview with Olympic runner Jesse Owens, recorded in 1979, the last year of his life; KUSC’s (Los Angeles) broadcast of commentary by George Lucas on the original three Star Wars movies; Twin Cities Public Television’s recording of a 1960 interview with presidential candidates John F. Kennedy and Minnesota Sen. Hubert Humphrey; and WGBH’s 1967 interviews with then-California Gov. Ronald Reagan."

The three-part video—which you may watch in full or in separate parts (links below)--covers NEH’s ongoing commitment to preserve audiovisual cultural heritage.  Part I provides an argument for the significance of a/v collections as an essential media for understanding the history of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.  Part II summarizes the full range of grant programming for a/v collections provided by NEH’s Division of Preservation and Access that covers areas in research and development, education and training, assessment for smaller institutions, reformatting, cataloging, and stabilization through sustainable preventive conservation.  Finally, Part III describes NEH’s strategic planning to address the current crisis in a/v preservation and access.

We invite you to share the video or its constituent parts widely not just with fellow audiovisual archivists, librarians, and engineers, but administrators, scholars, and anyone else who may be interested to learn more about moving image and sound collections.

"An MoU has been signed here between India and South Africa for digital images of the copies of 'Indian Opinion', a newspaper established by Mahatma Gandhi, to provide an authentic open source archive on the iconic leader's life and times."


"Gandhi's public life began in South Africa and no archive or assessment of his contribution could ever be complete without a comprehensive view on his South African years. No library or archive in India, including the National Archives in New Delhi or the National Library at Kolkata have a complete, unbroken set of 'Indian Opinion'. The signing of the MOU will boost the plans of the GHP in its inaugural phase to have about five hundred thousand pages of material related to Gandhi."

libraries are more important than ever to people who can't otherwise get connected: Nearly two-thirds provide the only free computer and Internet access in their communities, according to the American Library Association.

In the 25 years since the ALA adopted a policy urging full access for poor and homeless library patrons, few have taken this mission as far as Nashville's main downtown library, where Bailey arrives early each day, standing on an icy sidewalk in below-freezing temperatures with a half-dozen other people until the ornate bronze doors open.

Once inside, he goes directly to the third floor, where rows of computer terminals are quickly occupied by people carrying bags filled with their worldly possessions.

The library recently renovated this section with their homeless patrons in mind, ditching countless shelves of bound copies of "Popular Mechanics" and other periodicals that are now available electronically, and making way for 68 computers and more tables with ethernet connections and power outlets."

"Librarians can't solve people's problems, but we can provide them the resources to solve their own problems," she said.

Jodie Bell of Taylor & Francis asks: how important is social media as a communication tool?

A social media white paper

Taylor & Francis sought to address some of these questions by conducting research into how the library community is currently using and applying social media. Libraries have been particularly prevalent in their uptake of social media, and use it as a key medium for engaging with their users. As such, it is an issue close to the heart of how libraries are evolving and Taylor & Francis wanted to help benchmark current use and provide best practice recommendations to help navigate what the future may bring.

The research conducted was on a global scale – more than 600 librarians worldwide contributed their thoughts, suggestions and experiences through focus groups, telephone interviews, an online survey and a Twitter party. All the research was then compiled into a white paper, which has now been published online and is available to download for free.

"Past issues of IPN now available

IFLA is very happy to announce that all remaining past issues of the International Preservation News (IPN) have been digitised by the Preservation and Conservation Centre at the Library of Congress. IFLA would like to thank the Library of Congress for digitising these early editions of IPN and making them available to IFLA. The IPN archive of over 60 past issues is now complete and freely available online. We encourage everyone to re-discover these past issues of IPN, an important series that was published by IFLA for over 25 years with regular contributions from PAC Regional Centres. IPN ceased publication in December 2013. The IFLA Journal is picking up the mandate of IPN and will publish an issue dedicated to Cultural Heritage in its 3rd volume of 2015."
