Infographic: Library struggles since the recession - American Library Association's Library | The Information Professional | Scoop.it

"The American Library Association created an infographic to illustrate the struggles libraries have been confronted with since the recession began.

We've been following recent budget cuts and coping mechanisms, such as fundraising videos and offering updated technologies, as part of our Libraries in Crisis series. But to see these things visualized and quantified helps put things into perspective.

According to the infographic, WiFi usage in libraries is up 74%, and computer usage is up 60%, but funding has been decreased by 57%. Additionally, 62% of libraries report being the only location offering free public access to the Internet in their communities."

Strike Against Sopa! 18 Jan 2011

Strike Against Sopa! 18 Jan 2011 | The Information Professional | Scoop.it

"Internet goes on strike — blackout everywhere. This Wed Jan 18, many of your favorites sites will be unavailable to you to stop web censorship. Tell everyone, petition even more sites to join.

Sites are striking in all different ways, but they are united by this: do the biggest thing you possibly can, and drive contacts to Congress. Put this on your site or automate it by putting this JS into your header, which will start the blackout at 8AM EST and end at 8PM EST."

Getting serious about SOPA – what librarians need to do

Getting serious about SOPA – what librarians need to do | The Information Professional | Scoop.it
RT @wesselim: Getting serious about SOPA – what librarians need to do http://t.co/uHeF0hms via @zite...

Jessamyn West (librarian.net): "I oppose SOPA unequivocally; it’s vague, it’s anti-free-speech, and it won’t solve the problem it’s designed to combat.

One of the things that is tricky about SOPA–the legislation moving through Congress that threatens to enact stiff penalties for online piracy–is the number of things you need to understand to even understand what it does.

I’m very good with computers and I had to spend sometime getting my head around it. I suspect my legislators may not even understand what it means to start messing around with DNS files to essentially take a website “off the internet” if it’s found [through a not-very-confidence-inspiring process] to be hosting infringing content.

The website I work for hosts almost no content but links to a lot of things and we could be mistakenly shut down for linking to people who host “illegal” content.

So, I think we need to do a few things: understand how this bill is supposed to work, be clear in our opposition to it as a profession, work with other people to inform and educate others so that people can make their own informed choices.
