QR codes - Pinterest Board created for libraries and librarians by 23 Mobile Things | The Information Professional | Scoop.it

"QR Codes ("Quick Reference" Codes) are essentially 2-dimensional barcodes. They can contain hundreds of times more data than conventional 1-dimensional barcodes. Initially created for use in the shipping industry, they are gaining popularity for marketing to people with smart-phones." Weekly Wrap-up Thing 12: Games: Angry Birds / Wordfeud, by @BonnieMagerNZ

Weekly Wrap-up Thing 12: Games: Angry Birds / Wordfeud, by @BonnieMagerNZ | The Information Professional | Scoop.it

"This week has only reinforced my belief that gaming is a valuable learning tool. At libraries, we encourage people to learn and gaming is a fun way of learning. Children and Teens especially are becoming more and more exposed to gaming and by the time they leave school they will have over 10,000 hours of gaming experience.  Providing the community to access to games gives them access to online communities, achievable challenges to help raise motivation and self-esteem and more simply, lets them have fun. It’s not for everyone though and that’s OK. It’s also not easy. Implementing these idea takes a lot of time and effort to set up and requires someone with a passion and flair for gaming to keep it running.

And my favourite game? Fallout 3 Check it out sometime I highly recommend it."

Week 2: Take a photo with a mobile device: Instagram / Flickr app / Snapchat | The Information Professional | Scoop.it

Kim Tairi is the Associate Director, Information Management at Swinburne University. She loves her mobile. It has changed the way she works. Professional sharing and connecting is easier. Google her to find out more.

THINKING POINTS:

How could your library use photographs to promote library services, events and activities?Does your library Twitter account use Instaweather to provide a daily update?Do you have a permission form available so that when you take photographs of clients or events you have their agreement for those images to be used and shared online? How easy is it for clients to contribute digital photographs to your library collection (eg. local history)?Could you use photography in library programming (eg. how-to classes or competitions)? The Getty Museum celebrates the Instagram photographs taken by museum visitors by adding them to their Insta-Getty Pinterest board

Twitter explained for novices and on, run by ANZ Mobile 23 Things

Twitter explained for novices and on, run by ANZ Mobile 23 Things | The Information Professional | Scoop.it

"Welcome to the 1st mobile thing: Twitter.

As a long time twitter user, I was under the impression that I knew it all.  All about how to use hashtags, search, messages and more.

I was wrong.  I found various things I didn’t know and am encouraged that it is a great sign for how much more I am going to learn over the next 23 weeks.

Many of you will be using Twitter for the first time, welcome.  We would love it if you would follow us on@anz23mthings and use the hashtag #anz23mthings on your posts.

So let’s talk about twitter."

Email on the go - Week 3 of ANZ 23 Mobile Things - online learning for librarians #anz23mthings

Email on the go - Week 3 of ANZ 23 Mobile Things - online learning for librarians #anz23mthings | The Information Professional | Scoop.it

Linda Moore:

According to the Australian Mobile Phone Lifestyle Index, 60% of Australian mobile phone users use their phone access emails at least once a week[1]. So there’s a fair chance that if you have a mobile device you’ve already set up your email and checked it occasionally. But as I discovered this week there is much more to mobile email than the email client your phone comes with. If nothing else I encourage you to download and try some of the email apps out there – after trying the Gmail app I won’t be going back to the iPad email app again!
