Is it that important? A recent study by the Princeton Review, 85 percent of people said that they expect businesses to be active in social media. Unless your target demographic happens to fall perfectly in that remaining 15 percent, a presence on social media is essential for your company. That same study said that 79 percent of companies are already either using, or planning to use social media.
So you might be thinking that, because your company has an account on Twitter or Facebook, you are all set. However, the most damning statistic is this one: of that 79 percent, only 12 percent are using social media effectively....

I often wonder about how to measure the success of this blog. While there are many tools to measure page views and visitors, the absolute number of readers is probably the worst measure because it's a false idol. Feedburner subscribers, retweets, time on site aren't much better because they don't measure the true performance of a blog - what fraction of a target audience the blog reaches.
In order for content marketing and blogs to be effective, the writing must have a target audience in mind. By focusing on that audience, bloggers build a brand in a scalable and cost-effective way. So engaging the very highest fractions of that audience possible is the best metric of success.
For example, this blog targets startup founders, managers and employees. I journal my education and thoughts in the hopes that others benefit from these learnings. In exchange, I'm trying to build recognition within the startup ecosystem. Each morning, I'd like to log into an analytics dashboard that showed me the fraction of entrepreneurs and startup employees I reached the day before. And ideally, which content resonated and why. Alas, there is no such tool....
I’ve noticed an alarming trend lately–there seems to be significant amount of good YOUNG social media talent (22-30 year-olds), but very little strong social/digital talent between the ages of 30-45.
Good news for me, I guess–I’m 40 and fall right in the Gen X sweet spot. I have 18-plus years of experience in the corporate and agency worlds in marketing and communications. And 4-5 years experience with social/digital (not a ton, but enough considering the discipline hasn’t been around that long). Only problem is, I’m not looking for a corporate or agency job
But, what I continue to see if a lack of talent at the mid- to senior-levels in the social/digital arenas.
Why do I say this? I get emails from friends/colleagues around Minneapolis/St. Paul and they’re all looking for the same person. That mid- to senior-level digital/social media counselor/director with deep experience in marketing and some experience in digital/social.
Except they don’t exist–at least not in big numbers....

Instagram has slowly been transitioning towards a model where users can interact with its content on the web, and today it has introduced a full newsfeed for desktop browsers. Now, when you go to Instagram.com, users can see all of the photos posted from the users they follow, like photos by clicking them, and take advantage of inline commenting. For the times when you're not on-the-go and want to catch up on your friends' photos, this should be a much easier way to do so. While Instagram has long maintained focus on providing an excellent mobile experience, it has been building out its web presenceever since being purchased by Facebook. Now, users should be able to get the full Instagram experience on their laptop or desktop — though images can still only be uploaded from your mobile. Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom wrote that while he believes that photos should be shared while on-the-go, Instagram's web presence will help users have a fast and simple brwosing experience. Instagram says the new feed is live now, though some users are experiencing trouble pulling it up as of this writing.
Really practical advice... I talk to a lot of owners of small companies and I get asked all the time, “What should my company be doing in social media?” Most of these businesses are really small shops – solo practitioners, neighborhood retailers, nascent startups which may not even have a web presence. As someone who is deeply entrenched in, and very much in love with, social media, it’s very hard to say “Don’t do social media.” But honestly – more and more, I find myself telling some of these entrepreneurs and business owners that social media may not be the most important thing for them to do (at the moment they’re asking me). So how can a small business know when to not do social media, or which types of social media to use if they’re a very small or very new business? For most, it comes down to a matter of time, money and priorities....
