Yoga Notes:Physical Principles of YogaYoga For Beginners | Yoga For Beginners

Yama and Niyama, even in a “watered down” form, were practiced by all people of the world, this earth would become an abode of peace, morality dedication, selflessness, sacrifice, love, truth and non-violence. But we have forgotten them all and are surrounded by the adventurous Western life measures and moral-physical principles.’

By Asanas the Raja Yogis meant only steady, comfortable posture for Sadhana. But later Hatha Yogis have elaborated it and invented hundreds of postures strengthening the muscles and different parts of the human body. Yogis want to sit in certain postures for hours and hence, some Asanas are essentially to be practiced by them. But for house-holders it is much more important in curing and purifying the bodily malfunctions. Now a day’s most of the people are suffering from bodily ailments. In this context Asanas have more importance than anything else.

Hatha Yoga imparts a six fold path Asanas—Mudras. Pranayama, Neti, Dhauti, Nauli and Vasti. This latter Yogic system explores effective measures of correcting the imbalances of the physique and the psyche. Man can do Sadhana only if his body and mind are devoid of any uneasiness. So Hatha Yogis invented methodsto purify the bodily system to do away with diseases, to resist them and to strengthen the body and mind for a longer period. Hence, the Hatha Yoga system is more useful and effective for humanity in building up one’s health and for protection against physical disease. It produces not only sound health, but also a powerful, benevolent mind.

When I was a school boy, among-st smokers cigarettes were referred to as “coffin nails”. Every puff was another nail in the death box. We were aware then of the dangerous effects of tobacco upon the health of the smoker. Smoker’s cough was the order of the day among-st college undergraduates, and I remember our shock each time a student dropped out of the course because he was “consumptive”. He was always a heavy smoker. Yet, it is only recently that we have been given the real facts, not that facts have changed the masses in any great way. I am told that cigarette consumption is actually on the increase as the result of warnings now mandatory up on the cigarette packages sold.

Simplified Yoga: A Panacea for HumanityYoga For Beginners | Yoga For Beginners

TheHealthyTips's insight:

By Dr. Raman Nair (Faculty of Humanities, University of Cochin, Kerala)

India is a treasure house of neither immense knowledge, knowledge that time does not wither nor custom stale. Yoga is one among st these treasures- a practical knowledge, followed by millions from time immemorial. It is originally intended for emancipation.Raja Yoga and Hatha Yoga, the most important among various Yoga systems, are paths to the union of Soul with the Almighty.

Here, what I wish to emphasize, is not the ultimate end of Yoga science, but its side effects for the betterment of humanity as a whole. Raja Yoga is an eight fold path-Yama (self-restraint); Niyama (Principles of Observance); Asana (Physical Position); Pranayama (regulation of Breath); Pratyahara (abstraction); Dharena (concentration); Dhyana(Meditation) and Samadhi (contemplation). Among them the first four areethical, physical and mental purification principles. They are intended for social and physical well being as well as mental strength and improvement. Yamas are five – Satya(Truth); Ahimsa (Non-violence); Asteya (Honesty); Aparigraha (Non-Possessiveness); and Brahmacharya (Sexual continence); Yamas are self –restraints. If everyone in a society incessantly practices self-restraint, then the cultural height can be imagined. These five are quite difficult to practice in reality. A little simplification will be of grate use for worldly men. If we take a vow that we will abstain from falsehood and will speak falsehood only if it serves someone else, the world will be devoid of theft, malpractices and bribes. There will not be any infighting or any kind of molestation if Ahimsa is followed. I am of the opinion that Ahimsa can be simplified. We should do only the least, Himsa as in the case of self-defense and saving other practices also we can make use of this simplified, Ahimsa;i.e., we would make use of Himsa only when we are morally unable to refrain. If all people fully turn to honesty i.e., Asteya, then this world will become a paradise. In Asteya, no simplification is necessary, as also in Aparigraha.   But Aparigraha is not as easy as Asteya. All live by others and one’s decay becomes the base of another’s growth. Therefore, we can restrain our minds to the maximum of Aparigraha.  Brahmacharya is interpreted in many ways. Its real intention is to engage the mind in Brahma Bhava. Celibacy is a must for the moral, mental and physical welfare. Unusual, unwarranted and untimely indulgence of sex makes a man a brute. Even brutes keep some seasonal restraints, but man tries to become like an animal throughout the clock.  This has increased world population, multiplied unhealthy offspring and enhanced premature deaths. So celibacy as practiced by the ancient householders of india, if not that of sages, should be the simplified, Bramacharya that we should fall back on. These five great rules, even if in a simplified form, should be adopted by humanity. Then we could be sure that most of the burning problems confronted by us would be easily solved. Human body and mind would have become purified, and psychic discrepancies would have disappeared from this earth. So it is high time for the world to think of Yama of the old Raja Yoga science, and practice it at least in a modified manner.

Dhanu Kriya | The Healthy Tips | Scoop.it

The Bow Rocking Action must be done on a held-out breath. Although some benefits may be thought to be had by filling the abdominal portion of the lungs, the reverse is actually true. If the lungs are filled, the liver, pancreas and the spleen are pushed down below the level of the rib cage protection that naturally insures their safety from pressure, tension or blows. In modern man the diaphragm has become weak and easily spastic. The pancreas is enlarged because of our highly synthetic diet, and the spleen has become enlarged more than any other body organ because of constant abuse and infection. The gut organs are suffering from degeneration and the spleen particularly is vulnerable as it is an extremely delicate organ.

If you feel fatigued after a Yoga session, then something is wrong, and you should check the order in which you are doing your practices, your regular diet for faults, or your inability to give up ‘stress thinking’. Yasmeen Lee's comment, March 25, 2013 9:42 PM
This article was very informative for me because I have just recently started doing yoga this month. This article along with the pictures gave me step by step directions to follow. The do’s and don’ts were very helpful because it said that when doing the cobra pose I should avoid all jerky movements. Yoga should be a slow process and I have been trying to go through different yoga positions quickly but I now know that I have to take my time with each new pose if I want to gain anything from it. In addition to the cobra pose, it has many more links to different yoga positions which I can now learn how to do on my own without having to buy a new DVD. In one of the related links, the article explained to keep relaxation going when doing yoga. Do not let the everyday burdens take control of your thoughts; instead, focus on your body and movement.

Article about Yoga: Yoga and Psychology Yoga For Beginners | Yoga For Beginners

“Psyche” comes from the Greek root which means soul but also butterfly, because mind is like a butterfly. Logy derives from logos and means knowledge. In psychiatry split personality is known as “schizophrenia”.

It is often assumed that man in the Eastern and Western worlds are very different in their search for truth and human knowledge. They have always been considered as opposites in their way of thinking, living and acting. But this is a very superficial way of comparing the cultures because spirituality transcends geography and race. In every society, man has searched for truth. Only the methods have differed.

In this presentation I shall try to point out how the differences between East and West are only external manifestations, and how all over the world human beings search for knowledge alike. In individual man, as in whole cultures, knowledge is acquired in different sequences and at different times.  When I talk about the Western world, I refer to Europe and the United States because, as l will explain later, Latin America is closer the Eastern world.
