Curator's Note: This is a report from a "meta-review," meaning a review of all the other medical publications on this topic since a certain date. In this case, they reviewed publications on the topic of Sub-Lingual Immunotherapy (SLIT) for treating allergies in children, published since 2000. Their conclusion? The quality of even the best studies is only "moderate". Promising, but just okay. So? There need to be more clinical trials and studies of SLIT for treating allergies in children "Of 10 systematic reviews of sublingual immunotherapy for allergic rhinitis in kids, most only moderate quality http://t.co/ELXGJpwJ..."

Curator's Note: Many physicians have long considered gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD) to be a factor in poorly controlled asthma in children. The clinical trial just reported in JAMA compared placebo to a proton-pump inhibitor (anti-reflux medication) in children with asthma. They found that, unless children "had symptoms of reflux," their asthma did not benefit from treating reflux. But NOTE: chronic cough and night-time cough are both "symptoms of reflux". These are also symptoms of asthma. Therefore, it can be difficult to separate them. As a result, I have a hard time taking anything useful away from this study. From my own decade of treating children with respiratory symptoms and reflux, I "cure" a surprising number of children of their "asthma" using a simple trial of Zantac (generic: ranitidine) - a relatively safe anti-reflux medication. More recently, I have had families return to clinic reporting that they have had great success reducing their child's need for asthma inhalers, by using DGL lozenges - a 'natural' anti-reflux and anti-inflammatory. Anyway, the link here is to an article about the report in the revered Journal of the Americal Medical Association (JAMA). For what that's worth: "PPI Ineffective for Asthma Control in Children With No GERD Symptoms | AAFP News / By Lisa Curran | An acid reflux drug frequently prescribed for children with poorly controlled asthma does not improve asthma control if the child has no symptoms of..."
