Lies, War, and Empire: NATO’s “Humanitarian Imperialism” in Libya

Lies, War, and Empire: NATO’s “Humanitarian Imperialism” in Libya By: Andrew Gavin Marshall In this report I seek to examine the war against Libya in a more critical and comprehensive manner

In this report I seek to examine the war against Libya in a more critical and comprehensive manner than that of the story we have been told. We hear a grand fairy tale about powerful Western nations working together to save innocent civilians in a far-off country who simply want the freedoms and rights we already have.

Here we are, our nations and governments – whose officials we elect (generally) – are bombing and killing people on the other side of the world. Is it not our responsibility, as citizens of these very Western nations, to examine and critique the claims of our governments?

They are, after all, killing people around the world in our name. Should we not seek to discover if they are lying?

It has been said, “In war, truth is the first casualty.” Libya is no exception. From the lies that started the war, to the rebels linked to al-Qaeda, ethnically cleansing black Libyans, killing civilians, propaganda, PR firms, intelligence agents, and possible occupation; Libya is a more complex story than the fairy tale we have been sold. Reality always is...

The U.S. and its allies are embarking on another regime change operation. Before they started their attacks on the Libyans, they admitted that there would be civilians casualities in an act of irony. They claim to be acting to save civilians, but they will be killing them.

"Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the action amounts to an 'act of war' that is critical to remove Moammar Gadhafi from power before he massacres any more of his own people," according to the Edmonton Journal. [1] It also added: "The prime minister acknowledged that the military operation will be complex and could lead to casualties among the very civilians that nations are trying to protect, and perhaps among the military personnel being sent to Libya." [2]

The war criminals are back at it again.

Mrs. Gadhafi's Struggle: German Medical Care for Libyan War Victims Falls Short - SPIEGEL ONLINE | The greatest weapon is not a gun. Nor it is nuclear. It is information control | Scoop.it
The German government promised hundreds of war victims from Libya medical help, but many who were wounded are now struggling to get the care they need.

Afaf Gadhafi, shown here with her son and husband, was attacked by rebels in Libya. The war refugees now live in Munich.

The rockets struck Afaf Gadhafi's car one day last August. The 38-year-old,  had sought to reach an airport with her family to flee the civil war. But rebels attacked...

Afaf's daughters, aged two and 19 months, were killed, along with her mother, sister and nephew. Afaf lost an eye and suffered serious injury to her nose and left arm. Her four-year-old son survived only because her sister protected his body with her own.

Libya regarded as test of global doctrine

The joint U.S. and international air strikes targeting Libya are widely regarded as a test of Responsibility to Protect – which is a set of principles, now backed by the United Nations, based on the idea that sovereignty is not a privilege, but a responsibility.

According to the principle, any state’s sovereignty can be overrun, including with the use of military force, if the international community decides it must act to halt what it determines to be genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity or ethnic cleansing.

Manipulation of the UN Security Council in support of the US-NATO Military Agenda

Manipulation of the UN Security Council in support of the US-NATO Military Agenda | The greatest weapon is not a gun. Nor it is nuclear. It is information control | Scoop.it

United Nations Security Council decisions are portrayed as “the will of the international community,” and Security Council action in support of a national agenda confers moral authority upon that agenda.

For this reason it is crucial to understand the tactics by which UN Security Council independence is frequently usurped, and the methods of coercion,

intimidation and bribery used to extort approval from reluctant members of the Security Council, or from those members adamantly opposed to a particular course of action.

Twenty-two years ago, as a result of the Untied Nations Security Council adoption of Resolution 678,

which authorized the use of “all necessary means” to end the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, and “approved” the launch of the first United Nations supported Persian Gulf War, former United States Attorney General, Ramsey Clark, who had witnessed the devastating consequences of that war’s saturation bombing of Baghdad,

stated that “The United Nations, which was created “to prevent the scourge of war,” has become an instrument of war.”

In Libya, the US and its allies in Nato took off the white hat and handed it to the so-called rebels, comprising mostly tribes out of favour with Gadaffi.

The West took a visible role, especially in its bombing sorties, but one that made sure the local actors were presented as in the driving seat.

The West was only too happy to appear as if relegated to a minor role: enabling the good guys.
After Libya’s outlaw, Muammar Gadaffi, was beaten to death by the rebels last year, the credits rolled. The movie was over for Western audiences

WORTH 2 READ! ~~~> We Must Bury Imperialism in Africa or Perish. By Gerald A. Perreira | The greatest weapon is not a gun. Nor it is nuclear. It is information control | Scoop.it

"Muammar Qaddafi is dead and the Al Fateh revolution has been rolled back. Two months after his death, on October 2011, the imperialists, in collaboration with the Salafists in Tripoli and Khartoum, orchestrated the assassination of the revolutionary leader of the Sudanese Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), Dr Khalid Ibrahim. On a recent visit to Tripoli, president of Sudan, Omar Bashir, congratulated the Libyan NTC and said that 'Qaddafi's death is the best thing that could have happened to the people of Sudan'. When the chairman of the NTC, Mustafa Jalil, recently visited Sudan, Bashir once again sank into absurdity, claiming that 'Sudan has experienced no harm, even from the colonial nations, like the injury caused by Qaddafi and his group.' Bashir certainly wasn't speaking for South Sudan, nor even for some parts of the north. He was speaking only for those Sudanese who support the National Congress Party, which he leads, and their program to promote Arab hegemony.

NATO backed Salafist militias are working with Bashir's military to seal the Sudanese- Libyan border, and are engaged in a joint military effort to fight pro-Qaddafi Tuaregs and JEM fighters operating in the region. JEM's leader, the late Dr Khalid Muhammad, was residing in Libya prior to and during the NATO invasion. Khartoum wanted Qaddafi to hand over Khalid Muhammad who was wanted by the Bashir regime. Qaddafi of course refused. He had for many years assisted the African fighters in Southern Sudan and those operating in the Darfur area in their legitimate struggle against the ethnic and religious chauvinists in Khartoum. This fuelled Khartoum's hatred of Qaddafi, because Qaddafi openly supported the struggle being waged against the Bashir regime, and also they hated Qaddafi's Islam – an Islam that promotes justice, equality and peace – hence the name JEM (Justice and Equality Movement).

LIBYAN rebel leaders have acknowledged that their own soldiers killed their top military commander, contradicting earlier statements as the rebels scrambled to avoid revenge attacks that could divide their ranks.
The shifting and partial accounts of his death have raised new questions about the rebel leaders' credibility.
Shortly before the general's death, the rebels issued a subpoena for him to return from the front lines for questioning by a panel of judges, reportedly about charges of treason.
But instead of relying on a legal process, a group of rebel soldiers sent to retrieve him killed him along with two guards, then dumped their bodies outside the city.

Ian Martin, the top UN envoy to Libya, has called on the need to include women in Libyan society as the country is rebuilt. Tussle over Saif Gaddafi’s trial - #Saif #gaddafi #FebCRIMES #NTC #Justice #FREESaif #Zintan | The greatest weapon is not a gun. Nor it is nuclear. It is information control | Scoop.it

"The trial of Africans at The Hague had often come about due to the lack of proper legal and judiciary system capable of effectively administering justice.

But Libya seems to be ready to have its courts decide the fate of Saif. So why the ICC is still bent on extraditing Saif to face trial at the Hague?

Is it a ploy to cover up some secrets between his late father and western allies who later toppled him?

Libya has formally asked the international criminal court to abandon its legal action against Saif al-Islam Gaddafi and the country's former intelligence chief so that both men can be tried in Tripoli, where they could face the death penalty.

The 58-page submission, drawn up with the help of British lawyers, argues that the country is restoring its judicial system rapidly and that the men should be tried for their alleged crimes in a national court.

Saif al-Islam, who studied at the London School of Economics, was expected to succeed his father, Muammar Gaddafi. After the regime fell, he was captured last November near the town of Obar while apparently fleeing to Niger.

The Libyan government insists he has been held in "adequate conditions of detention" in the southern city of Zintan, "which will improved even further" once he is transferred to a prison in Tripoli.
