Ignoring natural capital could see countries' credit ratings downgraded

"A report by the UN Environment Programme's Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) says loss of soils, forests, and fisheries, as well as rising resource costs, are likely to become increasingly important to a nation's economic health – and may therefore affect its ability to repay or refinance sovereign debt."

This excellent report makes the link between the world's financial debt crisis and the global ecological debt crisis. The debate on austerity gets a completely different dimension if you look at this double challenge.

Is the European Meltdown a Euro Crisis or a Resource Crunch?

Is the European Meltdown a Euro Crisis or a Resource Crunch? | The Great Transition | Scoop.it

"Using Ecological Footprint metrics and monetizing the cost of Ecological Deficits, he provides evidence that the Euro crisis is a symptom of deepening resource constraints. Therefore, turning around resource trends becomes a necessary condition for Europe's economy to recover. While the biocapacity deficit cost Greece less than 10% of their GDP in the 1990s, in 2009 it shot up to nearly 40% of its GDP."

Global Footprint Network's Mathis Wackernagel makes the correct link between global resource constraints and Europe's debt crisis. What Europe really needs is not more of the same (economic governance) but a complete redefinition of its economic and social model.

August 22 is Earth Overshoot Day

August 22 is Earth Overshoot Day | The Great Transition | Scoop.it

Today, August 22, is Earth Overshoot Day, marking the date when humanity has exhausted nature’s budget for the year. We are now operating in overdraft. For the rest of the year, we will maintain our ecological deficit by drawing down local resource stocks and accumulating carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Global Auction for Natural Resources Heats Up

Humanity is using resources and emitting waste (particularly carbon dioxide from fossil fuel burning) at a rate 52 percent faster than the Earth can sustain, according to new Global Footprint Network data released today in conjunction with WWF's Living Planet Report 2012.

"We've entered the era of the global auction," said Global Footprint Network President Dr. Mathis Wackernagel, "where nations are forced to compete fiercely for more expensive and less abundant resources. It's in their own self-interest to preserve and restore the natural assets they have within their borders and avoid ecological deficit spending. In a resource-constrained world, such spending will become an ever-more challenging economic burden."

Earth Overshoot Day on 27 September 2011

"Global Footprint Network’s preliminary 2011 calculations show we are now using resources at a rate that would take between 1.3 and 1.5 planets to sustainably support. Our research shows us on track to require the resources of two planets well before mid-century."
