Olivier Rech developed petroleum scenarios for the International Energy Agency over a three year period, up until 2009.

Donations flowed to Gingrich’s nonprofit after he shifted on energy issues in 2008 | The Great Transition | Scoop.it
Money poured into nonprofit after he switched to pro-drilling, anti-cap-and-trade stances in 2008.

This article in the Washington Post confirms how the powerful interests of the fossil-fuel industry stand in the way of a smooth transition to post-carbon energy system this world needs. As with the banks, the bill will have to be paid later and it is society which will pay it after the industry will have distributed its profits in the form of huge bonuses. Or how history constantly repeats itself :(

The Unsustainable Political Deficiencies of Environmentalism

The Unsustainable Political Deficiencies of Environmentalism | The Great Transition | Scoop.it
The environmental movement won the ideological battle with the growth of awareness on climate change.

"But the scientific legitimacy of environmentalists' claims and demands does not translate into political influence when it comes to decision-making time."

Good analysis in IPS News. Green NGOs will need to rethink their strategies in 2012. Time for new radicalism? And how to connect to the world-wide Occupy movement?

What Happened to the WTO’s Original Food Security Agenda?

What Happened to the WTO’s Original Food Security Agenda? | The Great Transition | Scoop.it

The fact that WTO members could not even support discussion of these specific measures does not bode well for the adoption of a broader and more comprehensive food security agenda at the WTO. The disagreements over rules on export restrictions have in fact served as a distraction from the broader food security issues that the WTO is already supposed to be working on.

Blanchard’s four hard truths on 2011 are a joke

Blanchard’s four hard truths on 2011 are a joke | The Great Transition | Scoop.it

This analysis by IMF  chief economist Olivier Blanchard is symptomatic of the blindness of traditional economists to the real causes of our current Global Crisis.

Their denial of the new reality of "limits to growth" is becoming pathetic were it not that these guys are advising our political leaders on what to do to exit the crisis. What friends like this, who needs enemies?

What If We Occupied Language

What If We Occupied Language | The Great Transition | Scoop.it
A movement that challenges the power structure of language could help foster the sort of equality the protests aim to achieve.

Great article in the NY Times on the political power of words and narratives. By claiming the word "occupy" the Occupy Wall Street movement has given the phrase new meaning. Now the second phase of the global equality protests should call itself "Re-build" ("Re-build Wall Street" - "Re-build Europe" etc. ) and start drawing up the plans for the alternative system it aims to build.

As we learned from the Iraq experience, occupying alone is not enough.

Why Oil Prices Are Killing the Economy

Why Oil Prices Are Killing the Economy | The Great Transition | Scoop.it

On the ChrisMartenson blog, Gregor Macdonald writes another convincing piece on the direct causal relationship between high oil prices and economic depression in the West.

Why are none of our European leaders and their economic advisers getting it? Because it contradicts their fundamentalist belief in eternal economic growth. Better to remain in denial and hope that a miracle will save the Euro.

The Infinite-Planet Approach Won’t Solve the European Debt Crisis

The Infinite-Planet Approach Won’t Solve the European Debt Crisis | The Great Transition | Scoop.it

"The movement toward fiscal union and budget austerity thus represents the victory of growth-for-the-sake-of-growth over democracy-for-the-sake-of-democracy.

On an infinite planet, the two need not be at odds, and in fact can be seen to support each other. They certainly seemed to track together through much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as market economies expanded into an underdeveloped world. But in a world built out to the limits of what ecosystems can handle, it becomes increasingly obvious that there’s a tradeoff."

Very good analysis on why the neo-liberal, pro-growth quick fixes to the Eurocrisis will fail.

Book Alert: Betterness: Economics for Humans

"Betterness: Economics for Humans" is a powerful call to arms for a post-capitalist economy. Umair Haque argues that just as positive psychology revolutionized our understanding of mental health by recasting the field as more than just treating mental illness, we need to rethink our economic paradigm. Why? Because business as we know it has reached a state of diminishing returns--though we work harder and harder, we never seem to get anywhere. This has led to a diminishing of the common wealth: wage stagnation, widening economic inequality, the depletion of the natural world, and more. To get out of this trap, we need to rethink the future of human exchange. In short, we need to get out of business and into betterness.
