Now it's the middle class's turn to feel the employment earthquake | The Great Transition | Scoop.it
Christina Patterson: The brave new digital world is supposed to set us free. But if work is 'shared', not paid, who pays the bills?
Willy De Backer's insight:

Interesting insights on the future (or lack of it) of the middle classes. I like her views on "guru" Jeremy Rifkin.

Herman Daly: Why GDP Growth No Longer Leads to Increased Employment

Herman Daly: Why GDP Growth No Longer Leads to Increased Employment | The Great Transition | Scoop.it
Real wages have been falling for decades, yet our corporations, hungry for cheaper labor, keep bleating about a labor shortage. Something doesn't add up.
Willy De Backer's insight:

Great article by Herman Daly. "We are constantly told it is because growth is too slow — the single cause of all our problems! That we would be better off if we were richer is a definitional truism. The question is, does further growth in GDP really make us richer, or is it making us poorer by increasing the uncounted costs of growth faster than the measured benefits? That simple question is taboo among economists and politicians, lest we discover that the falling benefits of growth are all going to the top 1%, while the rising costs are “shared” with the poor, the future, and other species."

Infrastructure for the sake of jobs?

Infrastructure for the sake of jobs? | The Great Transition | Scoop.it

"Jobs and economic growth are the results of productive systems, not the other way around. Until we reconfigure our towns and change our growth patterns, our communities are likely to continue to be starved for jobs and growth. Building pieces of infrastructure with the primary purpose of creating jobs with little consideration to context is a recipe for disaster."

(There ain’t no) green jobs

(There ain’t no) green jobs | The Great Transition | Scoop.it

That is what the clamoring and pleading for green jobs amounts to : an attempt by parts of the industrial establishment and of the upper middle class to secure their position within the society through overt or covert public subsidies, and an attempt by the same groups to legitimize their resource grabbing operation by promising a lot of people (and nature) will benefit from it.

Provocative post by Damien Perrotin but with a lot of valid arguments.

The great transformation in the global labour market

The great transformation in the global labour market | The Great Transition | Scoop.it

The global expansion of higher education allows work traditionally reserved for the West to be done more cheaply and just as well in emerging nations, write Phillip Brown and Hugh Lauder. The result is that the wages and working conditions of western employees no longer set the global benchmark.

Brilliant article in Eurozine on the global war for labour which will put even more pressure on Western wages, working conditions and employment. Must-read piece.

The Jobs Potential of a Shift towards a low-carbon Economy

The Jobs Potential of a Shift towards a low-carbon Economy | The Great Transition | Scoop.it
The report argues that the impact of a transition towards a greener economy on labour markets will extend far beyond the creation of new green jobs, such as those related to renewable energy. This transition will create new opportunities for workers, but also new risks. The challenge for labour market and skill policies is to maximise the benefits for workers and help assure a fair sharing of adjustment costs, while also supporting broader green growth policies (e.g. by minimising skill bottlenecks).

This new OECD report also looks at the need to re-allocate workers from declining brown industries to growing green ones and demands serious reforms of the tax and benefit systems for workers.

Rebuilding the dream: jobs for the environment

Rebuilding the dream: jobs for the environment | The Great Transition | Scoop.it

"We seem to forget that everything that is good for the environment is a job. Solar panels don’t put themselves up. Wind turbines don’t manufacture themselves. Houses don’t retrofit themselves and put in their own new boilers and furnaces and better-fitting windows and doors. Advanced biofuel crops don’t plant themselves. Community gardens don’t tend themselves. Farmers’ markets don’t run themselves. Every single thing that is good for the environment is actually a job, a contract, or an entrepreneurial opportunity."

Excellent analysis on the Climate Progress blog from the new book of the White House's former green jobs advisor Van Jones.
