Fossil fuel industry must 'implode' to avoid climate disaster, says top scientist

Fossil fuel industry must 'implode' to avoid climate disaster, says top scientist | The Great Transition | Scoop.it
‘The age of carbon is over’ and a transition to a greener economy is inevitable, says Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, adviser to the German government and Pope Francis
Willy De Backer's insight:

These 'fossils' are not going to organise this implosion themselves. Divestment campaigns is needed but more radical strategies are asked for (law suits?).

The Quiet Realization of Ivan Illich's Ideas in the Contemporary Commons Movement

The Quiet Realization of Ivan Illich's Ideas in the Contemporary Commons Movement | The Great Transition | Scoop.it

" It’s important to stress that the commons is not a resource.  It’s a resource plus a community plus that community’s particular rules and norms for managing the resource.  You could say that the commons is a socio-ecological-political-cultural paradigm and worldview."

Willy De Backer's insight:

Interesting talk by David Bollier on Illich and the new paradigm of the commons.

How to Fix Your Soul

How to Fix Your Soul | The Great Transition | Scoop.it

"We've never needed Big New Ideas — fundamentally transformative ideas about how to organize the economy, society, and polity — more.

Like what? Like reinventing the rusting iron core of the economic solar system, GDP — to include the costs of planetary catastrophe. Like reimagining national accounts — to count not just money and machines, but stuff that matters, like creativity. Like redesigning democracy — so much so that ordinary folks like you and I can rewrite constitutions. Like reinventing corporations — to create more than just shareholder value. Like redefining "reporting" — to include the real human impact institutions have, not just the "profit" they mindlessly generate. Like revolutionizing our conception of what prosperity is and why it matters — to encompass the quiet wholeness and furious incandescence of a life well lived."

Excellent food for thought by Umair Haque on the Harvard Business Review blog.

A small step forward for Earth - is it really? Small thinking will not help

A small step forward for Earth - is it really? Small thinking will not help | The Great Transition | Scoop.it
In an election year, any progress on environmental regulation is cause for celebration. So when the Obama administration on Tuesday released its long-delayed proposal to limit greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, there was reason for anyone concerned about public health or the looming climate menace to cheer — even though it won't shut down a single existing coal-fired plant.

A small step maybe for Obama but with little relief for the planet. History will judge political leaders who lack the courage to free themselves from the shackles of "political realism".

Degrowth – A Vocabulary for a New Era: Review

Degrowth – A Vocabulary for a New Era: Review | The Great Transition | Scoop.it
To the extent that degrowth is an involuntary process then another set of issues arise – will the society and economy withstand the process without catastrophic breakdowns and what can the many kinds of projects and policies described in this book do to make energy descent a survivable process for the population? A great many people will be finding that their lifestyle packages are severely stressed and breaking apart and this will generate a great deal of fear and ‘negative’ emotions.
Willy De Backer's insight:

Fascinating, must-read debate between Feasta's Brian Davey and  Giorgios Kallis on the framing of #degrowth. Can we manage degrowth or do we prepare for collapse?

Where we wrong on peak oil? Don't think so... | The Great Transition | Scoop.it

Brilliant response by Rob Hopkins of Transition Culture to George Monbiot's recent claim that were were wrong on peak oil.

"The “we were wrong about peak oil” argument only really works as something to get excited about if you are a cornucopian who also believes that free market economics and deregulation is the key to economic growth and prosperity. It also helps if you believe that climate change is a scam..."

Can Europe pull back from the brink? | The Great Transition | Scoop.it

The Guardian has this brilliant and insightful exchange of ideas between two UK top journalists (Paul Mason and Gillian Tett) on the eurocrisis. What both recognise is that this crisis is only the tip of the iceberg of a more fundamental crisis of our political institutions and leadership.
