Introducing the Google+ Start-Up Guide - Saidur (Cy) Hossain

Introducing the Google+ Start-Up Guide - Saidur (Cy) Hossain | The Google+ Project | Scoop.it
I have been having the same conversation with many of the friends I invite over from Facebook. They are having a hard time figuring out how everything here works. Google+, I realize, is a concept that is a bit hard to grasp. It's a blend between Twitter and Facebook, private and public.

Naturally we are people who are against change. We resist change because change requires energy, whether it be physical or mental. But as history can attest to, we need change. I have seen many guides out there that attempt to lower the learning curve but no one wanted to go read a multi-page article about how to use a social network.

And so I decided to give it a try, with a short presentation instead, almost like an intro video.

A GeekMom Guide to Google+ Part Four - Melissa Wiley, Geekmom | The Google+ Project | Scoop.it
Today I want to share an assortment of Google+ tips I hope you’ll find useful. Like everyone else at this brand-spanking-new social network, I’m learning as I go. The more I settle in at G+, the more I love it.
1. Fill in the “Occupation” field on your profile.
2. Use email notifications as a searchable archive.
3. Don’t put people in more than one “reading” circle.
4. Try arranging your “reading” circles according to how often you want to read people.
5. Remember that “public” is really public.
6. Leave comments, answer comments, and get engaged!
7. Mute a post that gets too noisy.
8. Label private posts “private.”
9. Click the word “limited” to see who a post has been sent to.
10. Click the “user feedback” button in the lower right of your G+ screen and let the Google team know how you feel!

G+ Tips: Let the Right One In - M Sinclair Stevens

G+ Tips: Let the Right One In - M Sinclair Stevens | The Google+ Project | Scoop.it
Social networking relies on "trust by association". When you let just anyone in, you're giving your real friends bad recommendations.

Remember. The vampires can't get into your house unless you invite them. When you invite them in you are assuming some responsibility for their actions. Luckily, in Google+, it's just as easy to uninvite them.

How to Tag a User on Google+ ~ LockerGnome Social Media & Technology

How to Tag a User on Google+ ~ LockerGnome Social Media & Technology | The Google+ Project | Scoop.it
On Google+, tagging a user in an update or comment is easy. You begin by using either the familiar “@” symbol or using the more appropriate “+” symbol. Then, you start typing in a user’s name. The responsiveness of the process is akin to Facebook; as you start keying in a user’s name, a drop down list will appear, suggesting people you’ve already circled first and then moving on to people you haven’t circled if no matching names from within your cicles are found.

Circles: Dividing, Nesting and Prioritizing - Post de Ahmed Zeeshan

Circles: Dividing, Nesting and Prioritizing - Post de Ahmed Zeeshan | The Google+ Project | Scoop.it
We need to understand that a Google+ Circle has two main functions, sharing and streaming:

Sharing (output): This is content that you publish. Depending on your real-life relationship with your contacts, the information you share will not be the same for your different social circles. At the same time, your social circles may overlap. This means one person may be a part of two different circles at the same time.

Streaming (input): This is content that your contacts stream to your Google+ homepage. Streaming is different from sharing in the sense that streams depend more on your interests rather than your relationships.

Hence, to achieve more control over your circles, I believe it is necessary to divide them between sharing and streaming.
