Google just announced the launch of version 1.2 of its Hangouts API, which comes with a number of significant new features for developers who are building products on top of Google’s group video chat service. In addition, Google also just launched private messages in Hangouts as an experimental feature.

I love using G+, enough so that I’m worried that Google is going to make a misstep and ruin the service. Specifically I worry that Google will assume an algorithm alone is what’s needed to reduce the “signal to noise” ratio in the G+ feed. Several Google engineers have posted publicly that they’re working on this algorithm. One of the key issues that will determine the fate & nature of G+ is whether Google favors an algorithmic approach over a user-controlled approach to the stream. Facebook (almost counterintuitively) is the one that favors an algorithmic approach, and currently it’s one of the defining differences between Facebook and G+. Please give us control Google. If you do, we’ll have no reason to complain about your algorithm. Delete the scoop?

Isn't the idea of "small groups" elite and exclusive? Isn't that why Facebook opened up their membership to the entire world?
But when I thought about it more, Facebook and Twitter haven't actually made my social life better. Actually, I see Google+ as serving a completely different function. Facebook and Twitter can mobilize, organize, and disseminate information. It can and will continue to help journalists, politicians, and activists do their work. But sometimes you just want to hang with your friends, and when that can't happen in real life, something like Google+ could be the next best thing. Delete the scoop?

Google Plus isn’t the new Facebook. It’s the grown-up Facebook. Perhaps this makes it the anti-Facebook.
It comes back to the online party problem: It doesn’t matter how big the party is; it matters who will be there. And it has long been an unspoken law of the Internet that any online system that assumes people are capable of acting like mature adults is doomed to fail. A network based on the premise that everyone does not want to hear everything all the time? “Are you crazy, Google?” we ask. “What do you think we are? Grown-ups?” Delete the scoop?
