Green, White, Greener: Nigeria and Its Environment at 52

Green, White, Greener: Nigeria and Its Environment at 52 | The Glory of the Garden | Scoop.it
Despite the setbacks of the past five decades, the future trajectory of conservation, habitat protection, and other aspects of environmental health in Nigeria remains uncharted.

As the American-born son of Nigerian parents, my deep love of red, white, and blue is balanced by an affinity for the green and white stripes of my ancestral homeland's flag. Like many others, I recognize that much of the post-colonial history of Nigeria, punctuated by episodes of inter-ethnic strifeand frequent periods of military rule, has been a story of missed opportunities and unrealized potential.

However, as the nation celebrates the 52nd anniversary of its independence from the United Kingdom, one of the things that troubles me most about the country's uneven path towards progress is the consequently precarious state of environmental stewardship within Nigeria's borders.

August 22 is Earth Overshoot Day

August 22 is Earth Overshoot Day | The Glory of the Garden | Scoop.it

Today, August 22, is Earth Overshoot Day, marking the date when humanity has exhausted nature’s budget for the year. We are now operating in overdraft. For the rest of the year, we will maintain our ecological deficit by drawing down local resource stocks and accumulating carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Fostering Sustainable Behavior - Helping People Go Green

Fostering Sustainable Behavior - Helping People Go Green | The Glory of the Garden | Scoop.it

Sustainable behavior impediments can typically be boiled down to: commitment, affordability, convenience and incentives. Humans, at least the populations Dr. McKenzie-Mohr has studied, tend to default to the lowest common denominator of behavior when it comes to environmentalism. Of course, this isn’t to say there aren’t personalities who go above and beyond for the greater good, but overall, unless regulated to do so, or cajoled by neighbors or friends, most people will resort to the path of least resistance.

Knowing this intrinsic behavior trend, Dr. McKenzie-Mohr is able to extrapolate on how to best create systems whereby these same individuals could easily do their part to create a more sustainable, healthy and balanced planet.

Values of Buying Local Food

Values of Buying Local Food | The Glory of the Garden | Scoop.it

The best way to start is to buy food produced as close to your home as possible. ... working people from local areas will show more respect and pleasant attitude. ... complex food systems depend on large consumption of energy and brings tremendous stress to nature and the environment. ... food processors use large amount of paper and plastic to keep the food fresh, transported and stored for a long periods of time. Small local farms have local owners who live and work on their land. These people will try to keep the good soil and the land arable by maintaining forests and wetlands.
