Chad's only psychiatrist has his work cut out to convince patients their issues are medical, rather than spiritual.
Kevin Friery's insight:

"Public opinion here thinks that it means something is really wrong in your head, it might be because you're possessed.

"We need to demystify the more or less diabolical image of psychiatry."

2 Jewish groups get state violation notices for slaughtering chickens

2 Jewish groups get state violation notices for slaughtering chickens | The Global Village | Scoop.it
The California Department of Food and Agriculture on Friday issued notices of violation to two Orthodox Jewish groups that were slaughtering chickens in the Pico-Robertson area as part of an ancient atonement ritual.
Kevin Friery's insight:

I wonder if this happens in the UK? "... provide believers an opportunity to avoid difficulties in the coming year by symbolically transferring their troubles to a chicken, killing it and then donating the meat to the needy." Sheer cruel nonsense in the name of religion

Sheppey pile-up viewed from the air

Sheppey pile-up viewed from the air | The Global Village | Scoop.it
Dozens of people have been injured as 130 vehicles were involved in a series of crashes in thick fog on the A249 Sheppey crossing in Kent.
Kevin Friery's insight:

The only way 130 vehicles can be involved in a crash is cretinous driving. One or two, maybe, but 130? Nothing will happen to them, apart from the NHS patching up the injured and helping the seriously injured to rehabilitate, but really this is just a classic example of the stupidity I see regularly on the roads in Britain.

'How schools inflate science grades' | The Global Village | Scoop.it
Tricks used by some schools to inflate their GCSE science results were revealed at a conference on Wednesday.
Kevin Friery's insight:

When gaming of results is considered more important than education - the coalition legacy: "They are getting nothing out of this. Copy that, copy that, copy that. Then we are marking it and if it gets moderated and we are told it is not right we will have to call the kids in again.

Cardinal 'blocked sex abuse report'

Cardinal 'blocked sex abuse report' | The Global Village | Scoop.it
The former archbishop of Glasgow says Cardinal Keith O'Brien blocked a report into sex abuse in the church.
Kevin Friery's insight:

Yet another illustration of why we need religion to help us maintain a moral society.  Not.  "The Church remains willing to engage in any process which allows lessons to be learned and survivors to be supported."  I guess that is why they have blocked all investigations by the police at the time accusations were made, and prevented prosecutions.  We have a process - it is called the law - but the church seems to think it is above it.

Golden Rice: Lifesaver?

Golden Rice: Lifesaver? | The Global Village | Scoop.it
The fight over genetically modified crops has gone global. Is hysteria impeding science?
Kevin Friery's insight:

“A lot of the criticism of G.M.O.’s in the Western world suffers from a lack of understanding of how really dire the situation is in developing countries,”  This is an important article about an important issue.  The application of science to address serious global issues like malnutrition and infant mortality is under attack from people who mistake 'Natural' for 'Best'.  It is always a challenge when long-cherished 'truths' turm out to be wrong, but increasingly the evidence is that, applied well, GMOs can be of immense benefit to us all.  I can choose to go to the supermarket and select any from a huge range of foods - in parts of the world where this is not an option we owe it to humanity to make sure that the available food is as nutritious as possible.
