‘I’m 124 sandwiches away from an engagement ring’

‘I’m 124 sandwiches away from an engagement ring’ | The Global Village | Scoop.it

This appears to be legit, not a spoof.  The world is a worse plece because of that.

Kevin Friery's insight:

Oh hey - I just had an idea.. Why don't some women get tgether and make a thing called 'Feminism'?  By the looks of this, it seems like it hasn't been done before - "Maybe I needed to show him I could cook to prove that I am wife material. If he wanted 300 sandwiches, I’d give him 300 sandwiches — and I’d blog about it."

Factory workers locked in on shifts

Factory workers locked in on shifts | The Global Village | Scoop.it
Workers making clothes for the supermarket Lidl in Bangladesh have been secretly filmed being forced to work 19-hour shifts.
Kevin Friery's insight:

We can make a difference, you know.  It is not easy - there are lots of levers to pull.  Companies like http://www.whomadeyourpants.co.uk are already bringing us alternatives but this is a global issue with a need for a global approach.  The 'drive to the bottom' on prices everywhere cannot co-exist with ethical living - something needs to give.  We need to re-engage with the difference between 'price' and value.

2 Jewish groups get state violation notices for slaughtering chickens | The Global Village | Scoop.it
The California Department of Food and Agriculture on Friday issued notices of violation to two Orthodox Jewish groups that were slaughtering chickens in the Pico-Robertson area as part of an ancient atonement ritual.
Kevin Friery's insight:

I wonder if this happens in the UK? "... provide believers an opportunity to avoid difficulties in the coming year by symbolically transferring their troubles to a chicken, killing it and then donating the meat to the needy." Sheer cruel nonsense in the name of religion

Sheppey pile-up viewed from the air | The Global Village | Scoop.it
Dozens of people have been injured as 130 vehicles were involved in a series of crashes in thick fog on the A249 Sheppey crossing in Kent.
Kevin Friery's insight:

The only way 130 vehicles can be involved in a crash is cretinous driving. One or two, maybe, but 130? Nothing will happen to them, apart from the NHS patching up the injured and helping the seriously injured to rehabilitate, but really this is just a classic example of the stupidity I see regularly on the roads in Britain.

Airport's 'groundhog day' for Aaran

Airport's 'groundhog day' for Aaran | The Global Village | Scoop.it
Heathrow Airport recreates departure day for a young man with autism
Kevin Friery's insight:

I find this story disturbing.  He has been attending this specialist school for children with autism, who claim "...Students take on challenges, learn to overcome obstacles and gain confidence from their own success." This is all based on a gloriously research free Japanese theory called Daily Life Therapy.  If, after 5 years, he still needs Heathrow to make the admittedly-heroic efforts to maintain everything as they have done, I would suggest the parents might want to re-evaluate the provision and ask whether Aaron really is having his needs met and his potential fulfilled.

"If we kill a Gentile who has sinned or has violated one of the seven commandments - because we care about the commandments - there is nothing wrong with the murder."  According to Israel Shahak, author of “Jewish History, Jewish Religion: the Weight of Three Thousand years,” the term “human beings” in Jewish law refers solely to Jews
