Lottery tickets and long shots

Lottery tickets and long shots | The Global Village | Scoop.it
We humans have a curious relationship with chance. We're prepared to place bets that events with incredibly small probabilities will occur — such as the 1 in 259 million chance that a ticket will win the Mega Millions lottery . Yet, we go about our everyday lives happily ignoring far larger probabilities — that we might get killed by a lightning strike, for example, which has a chance of about 1 in 3 million in the United States each year.
Kevin Friery's insight:

Why do humans ignore the odds? Because improbable events are commonplace.

How astrology helps Indian business

How astrology helps Indian business | The Global Village | Scoop.it
Kevin Friery's insight:

It is always sad to find astrology having a stronghold anywhere where it matters, and to hear people trying to link it to science (plot spoiler - astrology is not science).  I guess there is always a way to separate a gullible person from his or her money..

John Yudkin: the man who tried to warn us about sugar - Telegraph | The Global Village | Scoop.it
A British professor's 1972 book about the dangers of sugar is now seen as prophetic. So why did it lead to the end of his career?
Kevin Friery's insight:

"Science took a disastrous detour in ignoring Yudkin. It was to the detriment of the health of millions."

Aaron Carroll today offers a graphic depiction of the toll of the anti- vaccination movement. (H/t: Kevin Drum .) It comes from a Council on Foreign Relations interactive map of "vaccine-preventable outbreaks" worldwide 2008-2014.

Vaccine-preventable measles and whooping cough, 20018-2014.  This is the harm done by people like Jenny McCarthy and others like the Australian AVN. Literally sickening.

School shootings unnerve Americans, but the number of children injured or killed in those tragic events is just a fraction of the young people harmed by firearms each year in the United States

Kevin Friery's insight:

Golden Rice Opponents Should Be Held Accountable for Health Problems Linked to Vitamain A Deficiency | Guest Blog, Scientific American Blog Network | The Global Village | Scoop.it

By 2002, Golden Rice was technically ready to go. Animal testing had found no health risks. Syngenta, which had figured out how to insert the Vitamin A

Kevin Friery's insight:

"...the delayed application of Golden Rice in India alone has cost 1,424,000 life years since 2002"   The hysteria around genetic modification has resulted in real death, real blindness and real misery so that science-deniers can bask in their power.  Of course, it is poor people who are most affected so they don't matter, because the intellectual snobbery of people who don't understand science must be lauded above everything else.  H/t to Ann Godridge for the link.

California can't afford to cater to the anti-vaccination crowd

California can't afford to cater to the anti-vaccination crowd | The Global Village | Scoop.it
The state of California issued an advisory on measles last week. Though only about a dozen cases have been reported so far, many more people have been exposed to the virus . In the Bay Area, thousands were warned to watch for signs of the disease after a man who'd been infected on a trip to Asia rode a BART train. In Los Angeles, far more people than necessary were exposed to measles because doctors failed to report two patients' cases immediately. One had traveled to Asia; the other had been exposed to a recently infected traveler.
Kevin Friery's insight:

The Anti-vaccine movement needs to be rebuffed with vigour and public safety legislation.  This is a good article.

Can I be 'cured' of my 'porn addiction'? Belle de Jour goes on the hunt - Telegraph

Can I be 'cured' of my 'porn addiction'? Belle de Jour goes on the hunt - Telegraph | The Global Village | Scoop.it
Porn addiction: we've all heard about it, but have you ever considered what you might do if you thought you had it? Dr Brooke Magnanti tries to get 'cured' for Telegraph Wonder Women
Kevin Friery's insight:

I like Brooke Magnanti - I think she often talks a lot of sense and she opens conversations that others shy away from.  I fundamentally disagree with her about porn addiction, though.  The examples she cites are not remotely what I would call 'porn addiction' and I have seen a number of clients for whom porn addiction is a real and serious problem.  You might argue about the label - is it Compulsive Behaviour? Is it Addiction? - but the impact on daily living experience is severe and disabling for some.  There simply are some people out there who cannot function without watching or reading a significant amount of porn every day to the extent that they can't live a 'normal' life.  This isn't about teenage masturbatory fantasies - it is a real adult problem.

The hidden suffering of the dogs bred to be cute

The hidden suffering of the dogs bred to be cute | The Global Village | Scoop.it
Far from being resilient to disease, many of these cross-breeds are, in fact, far more vulnerable to agonising illness and infection than pedigree dogs.
Kevin Friery's insight:

Interesting read.  Received wisdom is that cross-breeds are stronger than many pedigrees, but we need to see the evidence for these new breeds...

The evolutionary puzzle of homosexuality

The evolutionary puzzle of homosexuality | The Global Village | Scoop.it
Kevin Friery's insight:

" Since the early 1990s, researchers have shown that homosexuality is more common in brothers and relatives on the same maternal line, and a genetic factor is taken to be the cause. Also relevant - although in no way proof - is research identifying physical differences in the brains of adult straight and gay people, and a dizzying array of homosexual behaviour in animals."

Montana Catholic diocese files bankruptcy to settle sex abuse claims

Montana Catholic diocese files bankruptcy to settle sex abuse claims | The Global Village | Scoop.it
HELENA, Mont. — The Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena filed for bankruptcy protection Friday as part of a proposed $15-million settlement for hundreds of victims who say clergy members sexually abused them over decades while the church covered it up.
Kevin Friery's insight:

It is really hard to estimate the extent of mental suffering in later life that has been caused by the large-scale abuse of children by clerics in the Catholic church.  It isn't just a crime against a child, it is against the whole person forever.  Dreadful stuff.
