Wimbledon prize money up by 40%

Wimbledon prize money up by 40% | The Global Village | Scoop.it
The prize money at Wimbledon is increasing by 40% while the All-England Club is planning to put a roof on Court One by 2019.
Kevin Friery's insight:

It seems important to me that, at a time when the NHS is being decimated, school building programmes have halted, support for people with disabilities has been decimated and public sector workers are faced with yet another year of payrises significanly below the rise in inflation, it is vitally important that tennis players are to get a 40% payrise and that first-round losers will have seen their pay rise by 90% in 2 years.  Without such largesse, how would the poor, the needy, the disenfranchised have anything to aspire to?  Don't help little Mary learn science or clever stuff - we won't need doctors and other professionals in the new ConDem Nation:  teach her to knock a ball around, she'll make a killing.  Panem et circenses.

A sex therapist in Jerusalem has written a sex guide aimed specifically at the Orthodox community in Israel - and it's about to be published in Hebrew.
Kevin Friery's insight:

Ex-scientologist: I was brainwashed | The Global Village | Scoop.it
Former scientologist Jenna Miscavage Hill speaks to Today presenter James Naughtie.
Kevin Friery's insight:

I guess to some people this is like reading that bears defecate in the woods, or that the pope is somehow aligned with the Roman Catholic church.  To others, though, it will be disturbing evidence of the cult-like behaviour of an organisation that is wedge-shaped, designed to come between individuals and their money.

Businessman's bomb-detection kits 'were based on novelty golf gadgets'

Businessman's bomb-detection kits 'were based on novelty golf gadgets' | The Global Village | Scoop.it
James McCormick is accused of selling devices that did not work for as much as $40,000 each to countries including Iraq
Kevin Friery's insight:

So delighted to see this case finally coming to trial.. As the prosecution (and anyone with half a brain) understands, this was a fraud carried out by an avaricious con-man that resulted in deaths.  It is a perfect example of the way in which people are taken in by mumbo-jumbo presented as 'electronic' or 'scientific' or 'effective' when not only isn't there a scrap of evidence to support these but there is a plethora of science to show the devices did not and could not work.  For me the telling point is that armies relied on it, and as a result people died.  A murdering fraudster.

A school's decision to ban triangular flapjacks after a pupil was hurt is labelled 'half-baked'.
Kevin Friery's insight:

"The real issue isn't what shape the flapjacks are, but the fact that pupils are throwing them at each other - and that's a matter of discipline, and has got nothing to do with health and safety as we know it. "
