Crickett Firearms - My First Rifle - Youth Model 22 Rifles - Proudly Made In The USA | The Global Village | Scoop.it
Kevin Friery's insight:

This is the rifle that was given to A FIVE YEAR OLD as a BIRTHDAY PRESENT in Kentucky.  Sadly the child fired it and killed his 2-year-old sister.  No charges have been brought.  What on earth are we doing to each other? What are we doing to our children?

Royal College of Teaching proposed

Royal College of Teaching proposed | The Global Village | Scoop.it
The idea of setting up an independent professional body for teaching is gaining momentum, with supporters setting out how it might work.
Kevin Friery's insight:

An interesting proposal.  I'm not sure about the 'Royal' element but in reality it tends to add gravitas - it would be good if we had some other descriptor that was similarly weighty.  In any profession, good governance comes from within the profession whereas in the UK teachers are subject to impossible levels of outside interference so that teaching has become more of a political tool than a social education medium.  I suspect many teachers will welcome this, but I look warily at the Royal College of Nursing, who have been in the dock over recent years for failure to protect the profession and the public - any National Teaching College would need to learn lessons from history.

The European Space Agency says its flagship Herschel telescope, the most powerful infrared observatory ever put in orbit, has run out of coolant and stopped working.
Kevin Friery's insight:

But hasn't it provided scientists with a wealth of data to enhance our understanding, and haven't the images it produced been some of the most stunning ever seen?  It has been a wonderful thing to grow up with...

As the French National Assembly prepares to vote on final approval of marriage equality, anti-gay violence has severely escalated.

Equalities minister Jo Swinson praises staff at a Glasgow hospital for "keeping her alive" after an allergic reaction to a biscuit.
Kevin Friery's insight:

It is great that she had instant access to evidence-based medicine through the National Health Service - one of the real Jewels in the British crown.  Thank goodness she did not have to rely on something useless like homeopathy, which has led to so many people in the Indian subcontinent dying because it is completely ineffective.

A Sinn Fein motion calling on the Northern Ireland Executive to legislate to allow for same sex marriage is defeated in the Assembly by 53 votes to 42.
Kevin Friery's insight:

Somehow, Northern Ireland yet again misses out on the zeitgeist.  It just underlines how essintial it is to separate church and state.  No democracy should find the church trumping the wishes of the state.

60 thoughts about turning 60

60 thoughts about turning 60 | The Global Village | Scoop.it
It's a landmark birthday, the perfect time to take stock of one's life so far. So what has The Thick Of It writer Ian Martin discovered now he has entered his seventh decade?
Kevin Friery's insight:

I cannot remember ever before feeling the visceral contempt I have for this gang of posh sociopaths. As a rough guide, I would say any government that sets the welfare of the comfortably off above the welfare of the old, the young, the sick, the poor, the oppressed, the disabled … well, call me old-fashioned but any government like that wants hosing down the drain.

Oxford college under attack over plans to display live shark at ball | The Global Village | Scoop.it
Students plan to boycott the event – billed as 'a night of decadence' – amid concerns about the animal's welfare
Kevin Friery's insight:

"It's worrying that a leading educational institution such as an Oxford college would allow that view of nature to be perpetuated, of animals as an extravagant, gaudy show. If the organisers won't cancel the shark then we won't attend and we will ask others to boycott the event as well.

Wimbledon prize money up by 40%

Wimbledon prize money up by 40% | The Global Village | Scoop.it
The prize money at Wimbledon is increasing by 40% while the All-England Club is planning to put a roof on Court One by 2019.
Kevin Friery's insight:

It seems important to me that, at a time when the NHS is being decimated, school building programmes have halted, support for people with disabilities has been decimated and public sector workers are faced with yet another year of payrises significanly below the rise in inflation, it is vitally important that tennis players are to get a 40% payrise and that first-round losers will have seen their pay rise by 90% in 2 years.  Without such largesse, how would the poor, the needy, the disenfranchised have anything to aspire to?  Don't help little Mary learn science or clever stuff - we won't need doctors and other professionals in the new ConDem Nation:  teach her to knock a ball around, she'll make a killing.  Panem et circenses.

A sex therapist in Jerusalem has written a sex guide aimed specifically at the Orthodox community in Israel - and it's about to be published in Hebrew.
