This new blog will draw from a broad range of sources to highlight some of the values, thinking and lifestyles that people experience and subscribe to around the world. I think, despite all the developments in social media and communication, we tend to confine ourselves to 'people like us' and can miss some of the rich (and strange) diversity out there. Allodoxaphobia is the pathological fear of other peoples' opinions; in this curated site I want instead to highlight the ways in which we are the same and the ways in which we are different.
The Daily Fail describes Jack Monroe as a "Left-wing blogger who quit job to live on benefits" They then, more accurately, state that she quit her job to look raise her son. They seem to equate 'photogenic' as "unentitled to comment". A disgraceful piece of 'journalism' from a paper that lives in fear of regulation.
To be fair, Sainsbury's responded very quickly to this - it was the behaviour of an individual, not of the company. On the flip side, a company is responsible in law for the actions of its employees even if they are against company policy. The saddest thing is we live in a country where some people feel entitled to make such objectionable remarks.
