The New Design Thinking for Educators Toolkit

The New Design Thinking for Educators Toolkit | The Future of University Education | Scoop.it

By Tim Brown

"A few months ago education expert Sandy Speicher was kind enough to share her thoughts with me on the question: What's different when you look at the world of education through the lens of design?

"Today I’m proud to share the newly relaunched Design Thinking for Educators toolkit. This toolkit supports teachers in using design thinking tools to become agents of change in their classrooms, schools, and communities by designing more effective curriculum, spaces, tools, and systems. Created in partnership with educators, the toolkit includes real-world classroom experiences and an accompanying workbook to help teachers determine which challenges to address.

"Please share this free toolkit with educators in your network, and tell us: What’s your favorite tool in the new Design Thinking for Educators Toolkit?"

Simon Nelson is head of FutureLearn, the OU's venture into Moocs – massive open online courses that some have claimed will revolutionise higher education
Will Stewart's insight:

"The real attraction of elite universities, and the value of their degrees, lies in their exclusivity. Their exacting entry requirements determine their reputation, not the quality of their teaching."

The Best Teaching Resources on the Web

The Best Teaching Resources on the Web | The Future of University Education | Scoop.it
Those of us old enough to remember travelling to an out-of-the-way library to track down a potentially crucial roll of microfilm know just how much new technologies have transformed the way academics do research. We now happily rely on Google Books, JSTOR, and a whole parade of resources and databases available at the click of a finger. But what may be less obvious is the way new technologies have made improving our teaching a whole lot easier as well.

Sir Ken Robinson – The Education Economy

Sir Ken Robinson – The Education Economy | The Future of University Education | Scoop.it
It has often struck me that a conflict of interest exists across education systems, state or private, where the awarding bodies of high stakes examinations are also owned by the very same companies who sell the content, that must be learned, to pass the test.   Such an end to end business model would make…

If we think of economy as oikos (household) and ecos (place), it works. If we think of economy in a contemporary, neo-liberal way, we will get more of the same.

@ivon_ehd1

Marie Schoeman's curator insight, September 21, 3:57 PM

The “tyranny of testing“. The pre-occupation with high stakes testing at young ages, when kids are in high school or earlier, seems patently detrimental to learning and, of course, teaching, providing a false metric for the success of a school or indeed the nations that depend on them.

How Will Campus Networks Handle the Internet of Things' 26 Billion Devices? -- Campus Technology | The Future of University Education | Scoop.it
The exponential growth of the Internet of Things will challenge college and university wireless networks with large quantities of data, security concerns, bandwidth demands and more.
Will Stewart's insight:

It will also challenge the way we design curricula and teach our students. The role of the lecturer will have to change, and the way we validate and accredit learning will need to be overhauled.

Anant Agarwal, CEO of the nonprofit MOOC platform provider edX, had some harsh words for traditional education, saying it's "pathetic" that classrooms today still look like the did decades ago. And, undaunted by MOOC critics, Agarwal highlighted the potential he sees for MOOCs in a keynote address at the Campus Technology conference yesterday.

MOOC vs. OER: has evolution killed the revolution?

MOOC vs. OER: has evolution killed the revolution? | The Future of University Education | Scoop.it
Yesterday I attended a mini conference dedicated to Open Educational Resources (OER). I found it to be quite interesting as there aren’t many events completely dedicated to OER these days. In fact,
Will Stewart's insight:

I'm not sure that there is a connection here. OERs were always a good idea but undervalued and underused by most in the HE communit. The arrival of MOOCs didn't really change that. Indeed ,

MOOCs themselves are OERs - they are learning resources available to all. Some universities are now using MOOCs  as part of their undergraduate programmes.

MOOCs: Expectations and Reality

MOOCs: Expectations and Reality | The Future of University Education | Scoop.it

Click here to edit the title

Will Stewart's insight:

"Over the past few years, observers of higher education have speculated about dramatic changes that must occur to accommodate more learners at lower costs and to facilitate a shift away from the accumulation of knowledge to the acquisition of a variety of cognitive and non-cognitive skills. All scenarios feature a major role for technology and online learning. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are the most recent candidates being pushed forward to fulfill these ambitious goals. To date, there has been little evidence collected that would allow an assessment of whether MOOCs do indeed provide a cost-effective mechanism for producing desirable educational outcomes at scale. It is not even clear that these are the goals of those institutions offering MOOCs. This report investigates the actual goals of institutions creating MOOCs or integrating them into their programs, and reviews the current evidence regarding whether and how these goals are being achieved, and at what cost."

Donald Clark Plan B: From Rift Valley to Oculus Rift (7 lessons learnt at eLearning Africa) | The Future of University Education | Scoop.it

Africa is rising and needs, not the failed models of the developed world but new models that are more suited to the massive demand that already exists for education and training. This is not more universities but more vocational learning. The great opportunity here, is to use the great gifts of the internet, that are already there, for free.
