The Trouble With Secret, Whisper, and Anonymous Social Networks

The Trouble With Secret, Whisper, and Anonymous Social Networks | The Future of Social Media: Trends, Signals, Analysis, News | Scoop.it

Lately, sharing secrets has become a lot less simple. Now, with apps likeSecret and Whisper, people can anonymously share their secrets with the world -- and then have anyone comment on, share, or like them publicly. In a world where everything about you is public, these social networks feel like a safe haven for you to be the real you.

And people are loving the freedom of it all. Whisper's raised millions of dollars, and Secret's become the must-have app for techies everywhere. It's made us wonder. Is the privacy pendulum swinging the opposite direction so social media will become all about anonymity?

10 days with Facebook Paper. I’m still using it, are you?

10 days with Facebook Paper. I’m still using it, are you? | The Future of Social Media: Trends, Signals, Analysis, News | Scoop.it

Paper has transformed how I use Facebook and I have no intention of opening the original iPhone app again. It has some shortcomings, but I’m willing to forgive Facebook given this is only version one. What I didn’t expect, however, is for Paper to change my perception of what Facebook is about and how I can get the most out of it.

Here's Why 'The Internet Of Things' Will Be Huge, And Drive Tremendous Value For People And Businesses | The Future of Social Media: Trends, Signals, Analysis, News | Scoop.it

Estimates for Internet of Things or IoT market value are massive, since by definition the IoT will be a diffuse layer of devices, sensors, and computing power that overlays entire consumer, business-to-business, and government industries. The IoT will account for an increasingly huge number of connections: 1.9 billion devices today, and 9 billion by 2018. That year, it will be roughly equal to the number of smartphones, smart TVs, tablets, wearable computers, and PCs combined.

Apple TV Transformed, Given Market-Killing Price of $99

Apple TV Transformed, Given Market-Killing Price of $99 | The Future of Social Media: Trends, Signals, Analysis, News | Scoop.it

The new Apple TV is tiny--palm sized, literally--and will cost just $99 when it goes on sale in four weeks. Jobs placed huge emphasis on ease of use, running from its wireless connectivity to its trademark simple Apple user interface, and no need to "sync" the device to anything, or store files on it since everything is streamed from the cloud.

For TV shows and movies, Apple's done a deal with ABC and Fox, BBC America and the Disney Channel (other studios will follow along, overcoming their reluctance at all this newness, Jobs joked) to bring streaming rented TV shows for $0.99. Movies will be available for a rental of $4.99, and Jobs promised day-and-date releases with DVD at that same price--the rental window lasts 30 days, but once you start watching the movie you can view it for a 48-hour period. As movies get "older" that price will drop even lower. There's also seamless integration with Netflix, giving access to all of its archive of content--all of which streams over the Web already.

With Paper, Facebook just blew its own iPhone app out of the water

With Paper, Facebook just blew its own iPhone app out of the water | The Future of Social Media: Trends, Signals, Analysis, News | Scoop.it

This morning, Facebook is announcing a new standalone iPhone app called Paper. Contrary to earlier rumors, it's much more than just a news-reading app — it's a complete reimagining of Facebook itself. Once you've used it, you may never want to open the standard Facebook app again. It may not replicated every feature of Facebook's main app, but it does fulfill the majority of people's needs. Simply put, it's much, much better.

You Innovate Only if Doing Nothing is a Bigger Risk

You Innovate Only if Doing Nothing is a Bigger Risk | The Future of Social Media: Trends, Signals, Analysis, News | Scoop.it

Innovation is a paradox for most of us. On the one hand you are well aware that you have to take new roads before you reach the end of the present dead end street. On the other hand it is risky. It takes a lot of time. And it takes a lot of resources. Research shows that only one out of seven innovation projects is successful. So saying yes to innovation for a vice-president is a step into the unknown. If this big innovation initiative fails, it will probably costs it his or hers job. So a lot of managers wait in reality until not innovating is not an option anymore. This is so human. It is also frustrating as you as innovator want to start today.

Future Of Web Publishing And Journalism Online: Key Trends For 2014 And Beyond - Part II

Future Of Web Publishing And Journalism Online: Key Trends For 2014 And Beyond - Part II | The Future of Social Media: Trends, Signals, Analysis, News | Scoop.it

In the second part of this article, I am instead looking at these other key trends:

1) Dusk of Blogs
How blogs are changing their role and importance within the information ecosystem.

2) Beyond WordPress
WordPress has been a revolutionary tool for small and large independent web publishers. But in its fantastic growth, it may have lost track of its true original purpose. What's there now to replace it?

3) Instant Publishing
When it comes to publishing online, it's not just "ease of use" that web publishers want. Immediacy, real-time, is the new in high-demand frontier. How rapidly can you go from thinking of a promotion or a new report to actually having a professional-looking page of it online?

4) Invisible UI
Just-in-time interface controls are the future. The time of multiple toolbars with tens of buttons and icons, is definitely over. The new UI is basically invisible... until you need it.

5) Design Intelligence
The web design and publishing ecosystem presently doesn't allow for non-technical people to create and maintain professional-looking websites without having to heavily depend on a web design studio or agency. This is about to change. Rapidly.

6) Design Marketplaces
Big opportunity ahead for those who will make it easy and efficient to find, select and organize the best web design templates available out there in a fast, easy and effective fashion.

An iPad Running OS X Could Be Apple's Next “Big Idea” | The Future of Social Media: Trends, Signals, Analysis, News | Scoop.it

Over the past decade, the rising popularity of the iPhone and iPad—both powered by a touch-optimized “mobile” version of OS X—led many to believe that Apple would eventually fold its Mac line into the ever-growing iDevice division. But Apple prefers the “cross-pollination of ideas” that exists between OS X and iOS, even though Federighi has led all development efforts for both platforms since the iOS and OS X teamseffectively fused in late 2012.

Facebook is increasingly pay to play – but you still need social content

Facebook is increasingly pay to play – but you still need social content | The Future of Social Media: Trends, Signals, Analysis, News | Scoop.it

Facebook used to be the place I went to see what important things were happening with those I was interested in, that was its USP, that is why I liked it. But last week a friend announced his recent engagement on the site, and despite being on the platform on a regular basis I did not see this story till it got over 80 likes. So what is going on?

Last year Facebook allowed ordinary users to use the Promoted Post feature to advertise their posts to their own friends. That's right - pay hard cash so your own friends will see your updates. This is in stark contrast to YouTube, who will actually pay you if you create great content.
