This article discusses how Square Enix (an industry titan) is reporting losses on games that have sold multi-millions.

 

This is an interesting phenomenon is occurring in the industry right now. What's considered a high-budget or "AAA" game today is radically different to what was 20 years ago. While before, a game could be developed by a team of 10 people, AAA games nowadays often have things like professional voice acting and motion-capturing, complicated physics engines and fully orchestral scores. Budgets are getting higher and higher - so high that the final product needs to sell more and more copies to remain profitable.
