No matter what the conditions may be – online or face-to-face – the quality of the educational experience depends on the integrity of the curriculum, the teacher and the learning community.

That said, it's normal that teachers and leaders find the integration of online technology in education frightening. First of all, our generation of "digital immigrant" teachers must shift out of our comfort zone and into the world of our "digital-native" students. Second, it requires bricks-and-mortar schools to take a leap of faith into a medium that's essentially an unknown world. They have to let go of the familiar model that we hold dear – not necessarily because it works so well, but because it's what we know so well – to embrace an educational medium that many of us don't use, don't understand and don't trust. Third, and most importantly, it requires us to shift the power of learning from the teacher to the student; to become the facilitator for learning rather than the deliverer of knowledge and in so doing, to let students lead their own learning. That is a very disturbing prospect for many educators – and parents – because it's all about relinquishing control and taking risks.

But the internet is a natural part of students' lives and for many of them it has been that way since before they could walk. It's their natural environment for watching movies and TV programmes, accessing music, communicating with friends and organising their daily lives. It's not surprising that these digital natives don't consider online learning as such a risky venture. The internet already empowers our students with unprecedented educational access in ways that we could never have foreseen as teachers in training. The question is – how are we teaching them to use that power?

The way that users have utilized the Internet has changed since its inception. References to Web 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 allude to an evolved relationship with online information and interactivity.

 

To be more specific, Education 3.0 relies on autonomous learners engaged in self-directed learning. Contrary to being laissez-faire, this student-centered learning model is, according to Instructional Psychologist Dr. Charles Reigeluth, “attainment-based” allowing for an “additional focus on thinking skills, creativity, personal qualities, and other 21st century skills.”

To describe what this looks like, Dr. Jackie Gerstein writes, “[Students] can engage in self-determined and self-driven learning where they are not only deciding the direction of their learning journey but they can also produce content that adds value and worth to the related content area or field of study.”

has long been used to describe and organize thinking behaviours that are considered important to learning outcomes. Describing differing levels of complexity, Benjamin Bloom organized learning into six major categories, from the simplest behaviour to the most complex. At the more basic end of the spectrum is knowledge, with the most complex demonstration of learning being described as evaluation.

The 6 levels including sample outcome verbs are listed below:

Knowledge (Recall data or information) e.g.: defines, describes, identifies, knows, labels, lists, matches, names, outlines, recalls, recognizes, reproduces, selects, states.Comprehension (Understand the meaning) e.g.: comprehends, converts, defends, distinguishes, estimates, explains, extends, generalizes, gives an example, infers, interprets, paraphrases, predicts, rewrites, summarizes, translates.Application (Use a concept in a new situation ) e.g.: applies, changes, computes, constructs, demonstrates, discovers, manipulates, modifies, operates, predicts, prepares, produces, relates, shows, solves, uses.Analysis (Separate material or concepts into component parts so that its organizational structure may be understood. The hype to use the latest and greatest digital tools – rather than the meaningful use of technology – is like driving a cool car without any vision for where we want to go.

 

Let’s take the focus off the tool; Instead, let’s focus on:

 

- the pedagogy behind the tool and use it because it addresses our students’ cognitive needs, not because it is available or exciting.

 

- developing critical thinkers with the ability to find, reflect on, curate and synthesise information.

 

- developing lifelong learners who will be able to create and use their Personal Learning Networks to self-educate and grow.

 

- educating digital citizens, that is, responsible members of an increasingly global and interconnected world who know their rights and responsibilities; people who can make informed decisions about the content they create or share and its impact on themselves and on the other members of a digital community.

The terms 'critical' and 'reflection' are sorely misunderstood in education. Being critical is often misinterpreted as being negative. 'Reflection' is also frequently distorted to mean "reflect on what you are doing wrong". Too often the students that we teach give negative feedback when asked to be critical. So to counter act this, educators initiate strategies such as '2 stars and a wish' and SWNI (strengths, weaknesses, new ideas).
These strategies are designed to make reflective practices a more positive experience for students. It teaches them that being critically reflective is not just a negative activity, that it is important to be positive and give feedback to help improve or make something better.

Relationships are at the centre of education. It is no longer teacher-centred or learner-centred. In a sense, teachers and students are learning alongside each other. I am not sure it will always be the teacher leading the way although they have to be willing to know when to let go and when to take charge. Content is still incredibly important in that unless it connects to the lives of teachers and students it is not practical and meaningful. Technology is rarely seamlessly integrated.

A hallmark of a healthy creative culture is that its people feel free to share ideas, opinions, and criticisms. Our decision making is better when we draw on the collective knowledge and unvarnished opinions of the group. Candor is the key to collaborating effectively. Lack of candor leads to dysfunctional environments.


So how can a manager ensure that his or her working group, department, or company embraces candor? By putting mechanisms in place that explicitly say it is valuable. One of Pixar's key mechanisms is the Braintrust, which we rely on to push us toward excellence and to root out mediocrity. It is our primary delivery system for straight talk.


The Braintrust meets every few months or so to assess each movie we're making. Its premise is simple: Put smart, passionate people in a room together, charge them with identifying and solving problems, and encourage them to be candid.


The Braintrust is not foolproof, but when we get it right, the results are phenomenal.

Most teachers and current textbooks offer varied approaches to the material to be learned so the teaching can be brain-compatible with the varied student learning styles. It is only logical that respect for these individual learning styles be incorporated into assessment forms.

For example, teachers responsive to interpersonal learning styles find cooperative group work a way to pull in those learners as well to give students with artistic, computer, dramatic, or organizational skills the opportunities to enter the learning experience through their strengths and interests. It follows that assessments should also provide opportunities for each student’s unique learning style to access his or her highest performance success level.

A variety of assessment forms and some student choice can bring students to the assessment with less anxiety and increase the positive learning experience as well as providing the opportunity for them to demonstrate what they know (as opposed to what they don’t know).

In working with students, critical thinking encourages and promotes:

Humility to accept criteria that is not their own.Courage to defend their own criteria against others.Responsibility to contrast and take into account the appropriate information.Commitment to filtering out and separating valid from useless information.Respect for the group and for the individual when the time comes for debate and contrasting ideas.

To educate an individual in critical thinking is to educate him or her to be capable of governing or controlling their own personal and professional life and to be able to find answers and solutions to problems. It is the road to forming critical and responsible citizens who are capable of confronting the challenges of the future.

The culmination of my quest for more powerful learning grounded in theory and research came when recently I conducted an experiment in pushing constructionism into the digital age.

 

Constructionism is based on two types of construction. First, it asserts that learning is an active process, in which people actively construct knowledge from their experience in the world. People don’t get ideas; they make them. This aspect of construction comes from the constructivist theory of knowledge development by Jean Piaget. To Piaget’s concept, Papert added another type of construction, arguing that people construct new knowledge with particular effectiveness when they are engaged in constructing personally meaningful products.

Imagine my surprise and joy when I realized that I had arrived at constructionism prior to knowing that such a theory even existed. I believe that thousands of other educators are unknowingly working within the constructionist paradigm as well. Although many within the Maker movement are aware that it has it’s roots in constructionism, the movement is gaining impressive momentum without the majority of Makers realizing that there is a strong theoretical foundation behind their work.

 

After I came to understand this connection between my practices and the supporting theoretical framework I was better able to focus and refine my practice. Even more importantly, I felt more confident and powerful in forging ahead with further experiments in the learning situations I design for my learners.

The only concern I have and I have not read the book, is that her assertions seem to be feeding into the culture of fear and would like to see the stats she refers to when she says youth crime is on the rise. And whose morals is she talking about? People come from a variety of countries and cultures, I hope she does not assume we are all on the same page about 'moral' issues, she may be more conservative while others are more liberal in their beliefs.

What Is Web 3.0 And How Will It Change Education? | The Future of Education  - Where do we go now? | Scoop.it

We’re living in a Web 2.5 kinda world. If that makes no sense to you, check out this chart. It shows that Web 2.0 consists of cautiously adopting technology, schools are still online and offline, and parents still view school as daycare. But we’re evolving past that in short order (in education’s typical pace, that is). So what is Web 3.0 and how will it change education? What does that even mean?

 

This new table built by Dr. John Moravec details the evolving way we’re all learning, trying out technology, and growing as a community. Essentially, we’ll reach a new state of web skills when we reinvent technology tools to better enhance our personal learning. We’ll be at 3.0 when schools are everywhere and not viewed as daycare.

nformation has become increasingly complex, as have the mechanisms for accessing and manipulating it. Online growth has been dramatic and rapid, with “90% of all the data in the world… generated in the last two years” (SINTEF, 2013). The Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) suggests that an escalating and complex information environment causes “diverse, abundant information choice” in academic studies, the work place, and in personal lives. Compelling evidence illustrates the positive and tangible impact of information literacy and research skills:

Assessment data links a higher GPA to an information literacy course for undergraduates, provided and taught by Entrepreneurial Library Program (ELP) librarians (Norton, 2013).According to a recent case study, 87% of students at Columbia University reported that the strength of their papers increased significantly as a result of using information literacy resources (CredoRef, 2012).First-year students who use the library during their first semester have higher grade point averages and student retention, according to a recent study from the University of Minnesota (Soria, 2013, p.162).
