This made me think about not just how we as teachers feel about technology use in schools, but also, how do our students feel about it? We know many of them know more about how to use the technology than we do, so are we involving them in the decisions we make about use and purchase of technology...or are we doing what we've always done and assumed we know better than they do?

Relationships are at the centre of education. It is no longer teacher-centred or learner-centred. In a sense, teachers and students are learning alongside each other. I am not sure it will always be the teacher leading the way although they have to be willing to know when to let go and when to take charge. Content is still incredibly important in that unless it connects to the lives of teachers and students it is not practical and meaningful. Technology is rarely seamlessly integrated.

The way that users have utilized the Internet has changed since its inception. References to Web 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 allude to an evolved relationship with online information and interactivity.

 

To be more specific, Education 3.0 relies on autonomous learners engaged in self-directed learning. Contrary to being laissez-faire, this student-centered learning model is, according to Instructional Psychologist Dr. Charles Reigeluth, “attainment-based” allowing for an “additional focus on thinking skills, creativity, personal qualities, and other 21st century skills.”

 

===> Reigeluth defends Education 3.0 saying, “We need to refocus education from sorting students to helping all students reach their potential.” <===

 

To describe what this looks like, Dr. Jackie Gerstein writes, “[Students] can engage in self-determined and self-driven learning where they are not only deciding the direction of their learning journey but they can also produce content that adds value and worth to the related content area or field of study.”

I particularly like the part that concerns  to train for positive assertion versus constant compliance. The compliance to please teachers versus the ownership of learning all  to please parents often provides a conflict for me.

The only concern I have and I have not read the book, is that her assertions seem to be feeding into the culture of fear and would like to see the stats she refers to when she says youth crime is on the rise. And whose morals is she talking about? People come from a variety of countries and cultures, I hope she does not assume we are all on the same page about 'moral' issues, she may be more conservative while others are more liberal in their beliefs.

The terms 'critical' and 'reflection' are sorely misunderstood in education. Being critical is often misinterpreted as being negative. 'Reflection' is also frequently distorted to mean "reflect on what you are doing wrong". Too often the students that we teach give negative feedback when asked to be critical. So to counter act this, educators initiate strategies such as '2 stars and a wish' and SWNI (strengths, weaknesses, new ideas).
These strategies are designed to make reflective practices a more positive experience for students. It teaches them that being critically reflective is not just a negative activity, that it is important to be positive and give feedback to help improve or make something better.

A hallmark of a healthy creative culture is that its people feel free to share ideas, opinions, and criticisms. Our decision making is better when we draw on the collective knowledge and unvarnished opinions of the group. Candor is the key to collaborating effectively. Lack of candor leads to dysfunctional environments.


So how can a manager ensure that his or her working group, department, or company embraces candor? By putting mechanisms in place that explicitly say it is valuable. One of Pixar's key mechanisms is the Braintrust, which we rely on to push us toward excellence and to root out mediocrity. It is our primary delivery system for straight talk.


The Braintrust meets every few months or so to assess each movie we're making. Its premise is simple: Put smart, passionate people in a room together, charge them with identifying and solving problems, and encourage them to be candid.


The Braintrust is not foolproof, but when we get it right, the results are phenomenal.

In working with students, critical thinking encourages and promotes:

Humility to accept criteria that is not their own.Courage to defend their own criteria against others.Responsibility to contrast and take into account the appropriate information.Commitment to filtering out and separating valid from useless information.Respect for the group and for the individual when the time comes for debate and contrasting ideas.

To educate an individual in critical thinking is to educate him or her to be capable of governing or controlling their own personal and professional life and to be able to find answers and solutions to problems. It is the road to forming critical and responsible citizens who are capable of confronting the challenges of the future.

So many students simply want the answer...no thinking involved, the easy way. We are doing our youth a tremendous injustice not emphasizing both the metacognitive and critical thinking processes. They need to be able to explore a problem, then analyze, explain, and evaluate it in order to survive as adults.

The culmination of my quest for more powerful learning grounded in theory and research came when recently I conducted an experiment in pushing constructionism into the digital age.

 

Constructionism is based on two types of construction. First, it asserts that learning is an active process, in which people actively construct knowledge from their experience in the world. People don’t get ideas; they make them. This aspect of construction comes from the constructivist theory of knowledge development by Jean Piaget. To Piaget’s concept, Papert added another type of construction, arguing that people construct new knowledge with particular effectiveness when they are engaged in constructing personally meaningful products.

Imagine my surprise and joy when I realized that I had arrived at constructionism prior to knowing that such a theory even existed. I believe that thousands of other educators are unknowingly working within the constructionist paradigm as well. Although many within the Maker movement are aware that it has it’s roots in constructionism, the movement is gaining impressive momentum without the majority of Makers realizing that there is a strong theoretical foundation behind their work.

 

After I came to understand this connection between my practices and the supporting theoretical framework I was better able to focus and refine my practice. Even more importantly, I felt more confident and powerful in forging ahead with further experiments in the learning situations I design for my learners.

Teaching is both craft and profession -- and more.

 

Thus teaching is a deeply social and emotional activity. You have to know your students and be able to read them quickly, and from that reading make decisions to slow down or speed up, stay with a point or return to it later, connect one student’s comment to another’s.

 

Simultaneously, you are assessing on the fly Susie’s silence, Pedro’s slump, Janelle’s uncharacteristic aggressiveness. Students are, to varying degrees, also learning from each other, learning all kinds of things, from how to carry oneself to how to multiply mixed numbers.

 

How teachers draw on this dynamic interaction varies depending on their personal style, the way they organize their rooms, and so on—but it is an ever-present part of the work they do.

In our expereince those who educate others and facilitate learning are great at using different tools however they must be taken on a journey that creates both confidence in using the tools and answers the WIIFM. The demands and needs of our students are changing and we need to ensure we keep up with these demands and in fact be early adopters and not laggards when it comes to change.
