Artificial Intelligence Engineers Create Child-Like “Roboy” to Service Humans

Artificial Intelligence Engineers Create Child-Like “Roboy” to Service Humans | The Future of Artificial Intelligence | Scoop.it

The Artificial Intelligence Lab (AIL) at the University of Zurich is the home to a 1.2m tall robot namedRoboy. He is modeled after the anatomy of a 2 – 3 year old child and uses artificial “tendons” to move about. Researchers hope to have Roboy operational by 2013 and unveiled at the Robots on Tour event in Zurich.

Bridget Walters's curator insight, March 21, 2013 5:39 AM

Assisted by scientists and engineers to creat tendon-controlled motor technology that mimics the flexiblility of fibrous collaen tissues attached to muscles and bone in thehuman body. 'Roboy', is made of "soft-tissue" technology, and is hoped that, developments such as the advancement in synthetic skin for prosthetics will be made in the next 5-10 years. This type of AI system's developments in the near future could could asist with such things as:

• Delivering meals
• Cleaning floors
• Mowing lawns
• Acting as companion robots

Artificial Intelligence and Automatic Writing

Artificial Intelligence and Automatic Writing | The Future of Artificial Intelligence | Scoop.it
The science of artificial intelligence has embraced the art of writing and reporting with the founding of Narrative Science, a company that is pioneering the science of automatic writing.
Aaron Bailey's insight:

As time goes on we can see that more and more ‘human’ jobs are being taken over by artificial intelligence systems. To many this is quite exciting, but to the ones that these systems are replacing is on the contrary. As this article shows that now we have Ai systems that can write an article that is legible and publish it. This is great because the system can write and publish the article in a fraction of the time it takes a human to write, edit and then publish it. Time will only tell on how these systems incorporate themselves in our day to day lives.

This source discusses developments over a longer time perios, say 20 years or more, where humans could be talking about something called the “technological singularity,” a point when human history ends, to be replaced by whatever happens in a world run by computers or other devices whose intelligence exceeds our own.

For all the good robots can do, they’re built with one staggering disadvantage. No matter how sophisticated, no matter how powerfully built or how smart a robot may be, they’re only capable of doing what they’ve been programmed to do.

SOINN artificial brain AI can now use the internet to learn new things

A group at Tokyo Institute of Technology, led by Dr. Osamu Hasegawa, has succeeded in making further advances with SOINN, their machine learning algorithm, which can now use the internet to learn how to perform new tasks. The system, which is under development as an artificial brain for autonomous mental development robots, is currently being used to learn about objects in photos using image searches on the internet. It can also take aspects of other known objects and combine them to make guesses about objects it doesn't yet recognize.

As software automates an increasing number of tasks, is it time to reassess traditional workplace roles and create an office that suits both man and machine?

Nathan Heath's curator insight, March 23, 2014 9:46 PM

Information technology may very well be becoming an engine of unemployment as automating roles that once used scores of human workers are potentially the cheaper and more efficient alternative.

The future goal in the workplace is to have humans and machines to work not against but alongside one another to create the a cheap and successful work environment.

Aaron Bailey's insight:

The implementation of artificial intelligence in automobiles is definitely futuristic. With the G-Ai system that has recently been used in new models of Lexus cars, which learns how a driver goes around corners and adjusts the time for shifting gears.  This step definitely shows the improvement in Ai systems, but is what these systems are being used for taking control away from the user.
