SigFox downlink is now available since the Telecom Design SDK 5. This allow to send a message to your SigFox device from the network. You have a 4 message a day limitation. This post will explain h...
Nestor Ayuso's insight:

Good explanation.

The downlink message received by module is automatically ACKed with a service status message, in this case without voltage and temperature.

I was worried about asymmetrical link budget, and it is true. Uplink budget is little bigger than downlink budget with today's modems (TD, Telit). You need a high gain antenna and a LNA+SAW Filter to have better sensibility. Axsem modems have better sensibility and consumption.

Bluetooth 4.2 looks to the Internet of Things with direct IPv6 internet connection

Bluetooth 4.2 looks to the Internet of Things with direct IPv6 internet connection | The French (wireless) Connection | Scoop.it
Latest iteration also boasts a performance boost and added privacy features
Nestor Ayuso's insight:

Good step for short range IoT devices.

Bluetooth low energy devices can connect directly to internet. For example a wearable can upload data to the cloud through your smartphone without running or installing a specific app. And your smart thermostat can do the same through a Bluetooth Smart Gateway, all smart plugs or smart bulbs will use the same, not proprietary gateway

Telecom Design SDK 5

Telecom Design SDK 5 | The French (wireless) Connection | Scoop.it

New SDK release 5.0.0 coming soon !

New SDK release 4.1.0 Hotfix released and firmwares SOFT1350 (TD1202), SOFT1351 (TD1208) and SOFT1352 (TD1204)

Corrected a timing problem on first frame detected with new base station software upgrade.

The base station software upgrade consist in move the uplink center frequency from 868.2MHz to 868.13MHz

Nestor Ayuso's insight:

Telecom Design SDK 5 coming late.

After SDK 4 released in Feb-2014, SDK 5 would be released in Sep-2014 just in time for sigfox downlink release. But sigfox downlink release is late, why?

Sigfox is widening the uplink band with more channels and/or higher data-rates. As soon an downlink is ready, the modem will have feedback info about link quality, so it can use variable data-rate to save battery and clear channel. Remember sigfox had a variable data-rate of 10bps to 1000bps (V0) but when it was released commercially, it was fixed at 100bps (V1). It is time for V2 with new uplink center frequency at 868.13MHz

Wireless Low Power Wide Area Networks For Any Size of Customer or IoT Network Implementation

Semtech LoRa technology easily connects low power battery operated devices over very long distances. A complete ecosystem of partners for the key building blocks enables fast, simple, and affordable deployment of the most powerful IoT network. The SX127x family provides significant benefits for range, robust performance, and battery lifetime compared to competing technologies.

When combined with the LoRa concentrator from Semtech, superior system performance can be achieved by extending the range, increasing the capacity of the network, improving battery lifetime, and robustness to interference. The LoRa concentrator is a multi-channel, multi-modem solution that can simultaneously receive multiple packets. The simultaneous reception of multiple packets on the same channel is permitted by the advanced properties of the LoRa modulation. Semtech’s LoRa solution is leading to drastic improvements in performance, range, battery lifetime, and network capacity compared to existing technologies.

Wide Area Ubiquitous Network: New Wireless Network for Sensors and Actuators | NTT Technical Review

Wide Area Ubiquitous Network: New Wireless Network for Sensors and Actuators | NTT Technical Review | The French (wireless) Connection | Scoop.it

This paper introduces the concept of a new wireless network infrastructure called the wide area ubiquitous network (WAUN). In this network, each cell has a wide coverage and can accommodate many low-power-consumption low-capability terminals, which can work as sensors and actuators. Examples of new applications that WAUN should support are shown and the features of WAUN are discussed. This paper also describes the importance of long-range wireless access with low-power transmission as a basic principle for the design targets of WAUN.
